🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and position it where it cannot spring back.
- Wait at least two minutes before working on the starter wiring.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Truck
- Position the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum beneath an approved front lifting point.
- Raise the passenger side enough to create safe working room.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum beneath the frame and slowly lower the truck onto them.
- Push the truck gently to confirm it’s stable before going underneath.
Step 3: Locate the Starter
- Move under the passenger side wearing safety glasses.
- Find the cylindrical starter where the engine block meets the transmission bellhousing. The bellhousing is the large casing around the transmission’s front end.
- Note the routing of the large battery cable and smaller control wire. Take a reference photo before disconnecting anything.
Step 4: Remove the Splash Shield or Starter Heat Shield
- Use an 8mm socket or trim-clip removal tool to remove any lower splash shield blocking access.
- Use a 10mm socket or 13mm socket if a metal starter heat shield is installed.
- Save every fastener and note the shield’s orientation.
Step 5: Disconnect the Starter Control Wire
- Release any connector lock using a small flat-blade screwdriver. Don’t pull directly on the wire.
- If the control wire uses a retaining nut, remove it with the appropriately fitting 8mm socket or 10mm socket.
- Move the wire aside without sharply bending it.
Step 6: Disconnect the Main Battery Cable
- Use a 13mm socket to remove the nut securing the large battery cable to the starter solenoid.
- The solenoid is the smaller cylinder attached to the starter that switches battery power into the motor.
- Lift the cable terminal straight off the stud. Inspect it for green corrosion, overheated insulation, or a loose crimp.
- Clean light corrosion with a wire terminal cleaning brush and electrical contact cleaner.
Step 7: Remove the Starter Mounting Bolts
- Support the starter with one hand or a suitable support before loosening the bolts.
- Use a 15mm socket, extension, universal joint, and ratchet to loosen both starter mounting bolts.
- Remove the easier bolt first. Hold the starter securely while removing the final bolt.
- Lower the starter carefully and guide it around the nearby exhaust components.
- Heavy parts always find unprotected fingers.
Step 8: Compare the New and Old Starters
- Place both starters beside each other and compare the nose housing, gear, mounting holes, overall length, and electrical terminals.
- Confirm the large battery stud and small control terminal are in matching positions.
- Transfer only shields or brackets designed to be reused. Don’t transfer an old shim unless one was installed originally.
- Turn the starter gear by hand only enough to inspect it. Don’t energize the starter while holding it.
Step 9: Install the Replacement Starter
- Lift the replacement starter into position and hold it squarely against the engine.
- Start both mounting bolts by hand for several turns. This prevents cross-threading the engine block.
- Use a 15mm socket to snug the bolts evenly.
- Use the 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the mounting bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Reconnect the Starter Wiring
- Place the large battery-cable terminal flat against the correct solenoid stud.
- Install its nut by hand, then tighten it with a 13mm socket and inch-pound torque wrench.
- Tighten the main terminal nut to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs). Hold the cable still so it doesn’t twist against the stud.
- Reconnect the smaller control wire using the appropriate 8mm socket or 10mm socket.
- Tighten a small control-terminal nut to 3 Nm (27 in-lbs). Don’t overtighten it because the insulated terminal can crack.
- Confirm neither cable touches the exhaust or hangs under tension.
Step 11: Reinstall the Shields
- Reinstall the starter heat shield in its original orientation using the appropriate 10mm socket or 13mm socket.
- Reinstall the lower splash shield using the 8mm socket and trim-clip removal tool.
- Check that no tools or loose fasteners remain underneath the truck.
Step 12: Lower the Truck and Reconnect the Battery
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the truck slightly off the stands.
- Remove the stands and lower the truck slowly.
- Place the negative battery cable back onto its post.
- Use the 10mm socket to tighten the clamp until it cannot rotate by hand. Don’t crush or distort the terminal.

- Start the engine and listen for quick, clean cranking without grinding, whining, or repeated clicking.
- Switch the engine off and restart it two or three times.
- If the starter grinds, stop immediately. Recheck starter seating, bolt tightness, and whether an original shim was omitted.
- If it only clicks, recheck the battery charge, terminal connections, engine ground, and starter cable.
- Check underneath for loose shields or wiring close to the exhaust.
- The starter normally requires no programming or relearn procedure.
