📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Odyssey on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and place a fender cover over the painted edge near the battery area.
  • Make sure you have the replacement starter nearby before disassembly.
  • Write down radio presets if you want to save them.
  • A torque wrench tightens bolts to an exact tightness so they are not too loose or too tight.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and tuck it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen and remove the positive battery terminal if extra working space is needed.
  • Negative cable comes off first.

Step 2: Remove the Battery Hold-Down and Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the battery hold-down nuts.
  • Lift off the hold-down bracket and set it aside.
  • Carefully lift the battery straight up and out. Batteries are heavy, so use both hands.
  • Use a battery terminal brush to clean the cable ends if you see white or green corrosion.

Step 3: Remove the Battery Tray

  • Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch socket extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the battery tray bolts.
  • Lift the battery tray out of the engine bay.
  • If wiring clips are attached, use a trim clip removal tool to release them gently.

Step 4: Remove Intake Ducting for Access

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the air intake hose clamp.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to release any small hose clamps connected to the intake tube.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove intake resonator or duct mounting bolts as needed.
  • Move the intake ducting aside to improve access to the starter area.
  • Take a photo before removing hoses.

Step 5: Locate the Starter Motor

  • Use a shop light and look down toward the transmission bellhousing area, below the battery tray location.
  • The starter is a small cylindrical motor bolted to the transmission side of the engine.
  • The bellhousing is the rounded transmission case section where the engine and transmission meet.

Step 6: Disconnect the Starter Electrical Connectors

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently release the small push-on starter signal connector.
  • Pull the small connector straight off by the connector body, not by the wire.
  • Pull back the rubber cover on the large starter cable terminal.
  • Use a 12mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the large starter cable nut.
  • Move the large cable aside so it does not touch metal.

Step 7: Remove the Starter Mounting Bolts

  • Support the starter with one hand before removing the last bolt.
  • Use a 14mm socket, 6-inch socket extension, and 3/8-inch breaker bar to loosen the starter mounting bolts.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the bolts fully.
  • If a bracket uses a larger fastener on your starter area, use a 17mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove it.
  • Carefully lift the starter out of the engine bay.
  • Starter is heavier than it looks.

Step 8: Compare the Old and New Starter

  • Place both starters side by side on a clean surface.
  • Check that the mounting ears, electrical terminals, and gear nose match.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver only to gently transfer any small wire retainers if needed.

Step 9: Install the New Starter

  • Lower the new starter into place by hand.
  • Start both mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 14mm socket, 6-inch socket extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the starter mounting bolts.
  • Use a 3/8-inch torque wrench and 14mm socket to tighten the starter mounting bolts to Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs).
  • If a support bracket was removed, use a 3/8-inch torque wrench and correct socket to tighten the bracket fastener to Torque to 22 Nm (16 ft-lbs) unless the removed fastener size indicates a larger bracket bolt.

Step 10: Reconnect the Starter Wiring

  • Place the large starter cable onto the starter terminal.
  • Use a 12mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the starter cable nut to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
  • Slide the rubber protective cover fully over the large terminal.
  • Push the small signal connector onto the starter until it clicks.
  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the outside seal area only if the connector seal is dry.

Step 11: Reinstall the Intake Ducting

  • Set the intake ducting back into position.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall any duct or resonator bolts.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to tighten the intake hose clamp until snug.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to reinstall any small hose clamps.
  • Make sure no hoses are left disconnected.

Step 12: Reinstall the Battery Tray and Battery

  • Place the battery tray back into position.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch socket extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall the battery tray bolts.
  • Set the battery into the tray with the posts in the same orientation as before.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall the battery hold-down bracket.
  • Tighten the hold-down until the battery does not move, but do not crush the battery case.

Step 13: Reconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to connect the positive battery terminal first.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to connect the negative battery terminal last.
  • Use battery terminal protector spray on the terminals after they are tight.
  • Positive on first, negative on last.

Step 14: Start the Engine

  • Sit in the driver seat and press the brake pedal.
  • Press the start button and listen for a clean, strong crank.
  • If the engine does not crank, stop and recheck the starter cable, small signal connector, and battery terminals.

  • ✅ Let the engine idle for a few minutes so the idle system can relearn after battery disconnect.
  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel fully left and right once if any steering warning appears after reconnecting the battery.
  • ✅ Reset the clock and radio presets if needed.
  • ✅ Check that all intake hoses are connected and the engine idles smoothly.
  • ✅ Test-start your Odyssey several times before driving.
