🔧 Starter Motor - Replacement

On your Equinox, the starter is mounted low on the engine/transaxle area and is usually replaced from underneath with the splash shield removed. You’ll disconnect the battery, remove the electrical connections, unbolt the starter, and install the new unit in the same position.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable first. The starter cable is always hot and can spark.
  • Use jack stands on solid ground. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • Keep hands clear of the cooling fan and belts if the vehicle must be raised and key-on testing is needed.
  • The starter is heavy and may drop when the last bolt comes out.
  • Wear safety glasses. Starter dust and rust can fall when working underneath.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Shift to Park and chock the rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
  • Wait at least 5 minutes before touching starter wiring.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect power

  • Use a 10mm wrench to remove the negative battery cable from the battery.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back to the post.

Step 2: Raise the vehicle

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of the Equinox at the proper lift points.
  • Support it with jack stands before going underneath.
  • Shake the vehicle gently before crawling under.

Step 3: Remove the lower splash shield

  • Use a trim clip tool and 13mm socket to remove the lower engine cover or splash shield fasteners.
  • Set the shield and hardware aside in order.

Step 4: Locate and disconnect the starter wiring

  • Find the starter on the engine/transaxle junction area.
  • Use a 10mm wrench or 13mm socket to remove the battery cable nut from the starter terminal.
  • Remove the smaller solenoid wire connector carefully with a flat-blade screwdriver if needed.
  • Move both wires aside so they cannot contact metal.

Step 5: Remove the starter mounting bolts

  • Use a 15mm socket with extensions and a ratchet to remove the starter bolts.
  • Support the starter with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
  • Expect the starter to drop slightly when free.

Step 6: Remove the starter

  • Lower the starter out of the vehicle carefully.
  • Compare the new starter to the old one before installing.

Step 7: Install the new starter

  • Position the new starter in place by hand first.
  • Start both mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 15mm socket to tighten the bolts evenly.
  • Torque to factory specification if available for your exact starter bolts.

Step 8: Reconnect the starter wiring

  • Reconnect the solenoid wire first.
  • Install the main battery cable and tighten the nut with a 10mm wrench or 13mm socket.
  • Torque to factory specification if available for the terminal nut.

Step 9: Reinstall the splash shield

  • Reinstall the lower cover using the trim clip tool and 13mm socket.
  • Make sure all clips and fasteners are seated fully.

Step 10: Restore power and test

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
  • Lower the vehicle from the jack stands.
  • Start the engine and confirm the starter engages normally.
  • Check for warning lights, loose wiring, or unusual noises.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify the engine starts several times in a row.
  • Check underneath for any loose parts or wiring before driving.
  • If the battery was weak, charge or test it to protect the new starter.
