📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your CR-V on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🔑 Move the key fob at least 15 feet away from the vehicle.

  • 🔋 Open the hood and plan to disconnect the negative battery cable first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and tuck it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Use a fender cover to protect the paint while you work over the engine bay.
  • Negative cable comes off first.

Step 2: Remove the Engine Cover and Intake Duct

  • Lift the plastic engine cover straight upward by hand to release it from its rubber mounts.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the air intake duct clamp at the air cleaner box.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the intake duct clamp at the turbo inlet side.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to release any small hose clamp attached to the intake duct.
  • Remove the intake duct and set it aside.

Step 3: Move the Air Cleaner Housing for Access

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the air cleaner housing mounting bolts.
  • Disconnect the mass airflow sensor connector by pressing the lock tab with your thumb, then pulling the connector straight off.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to release any wire harness clips attached to the housing.
  • Lift the air cleaner housing out of the engine bay.
  • During installation, tighten air cleaner housing bolts snugly with the 10mm socket; do not overtighten plastic parts.

Step 4: Locate the Starter

  • Use a work light to look down toward the transmission bellhousing area under the intake side of the engine.
  • The starter is a small cylindrical electric motor bolted to the transmission where the engine and transmission meet.
  • Identify the large battery cable and the smaller control connector on the starter.

Step 5: Disconnect the Starter Electrical Connections

  • Pull back the rubber protective boot from the large starter cable terminal by hand.
  • Use a 12mm socket to remove the nut from the large starter cable terminal.
  • Lift the large cable off the starter terminal and position it aside.
  • Press the lock tab on the small starter control connector and unplug it by hand.
  • If the connector is stubborn, use a flat-blade screwdriver gently on the lock tab only.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 6: Remove the Starter Mounting Bolts

  • Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch extension to loosen the easier-to-reach starter mounting bolt.
  • Use a 14mm socket, 12-inch extension, and universal joint adapter to loosen the harder-to-reach starter mounting bolt.
  • Support the starter with one hand while removing the last bolt.
  • Carefully pull the starter away from the transmission and remove it from the engine bay.
  • Starters are heavier than they look.

Step 7: Compare the Old and New Starter

  • Place both starters side by side on a clean surface.
  • Check that the mounting ears, electrical terminals, and gear nose match.
  • Use a battery terminal brush to clean the large starter cable eyelet if it has corrosion.
  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease around the connector seal area, not on the metal contact face.

Step 8: Install the New Starter

  • Position the new starter into the transmission opening by hand.
  • Start both mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and extensions to snug both starter mounting bolts evenly.
  • Use a torque wrench 10-100 ft-lb and 14mm socket to tighten the starter mounting bolts to Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reconnect Starter Wiring

  • Push the small starter control connector onto the starter until it clicks.
  • Install the large starter cable onto the starter terminal.
  • Use a 12mm socket and torque wrench 10-100 ft-lb to tighten the starter terminal nut to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
  • Slide the rubber protective boot fully over the terminal.
  • Covered terminals prevent shorts.

Step 10: Reinstall the Air Cleaner Housing and Intake Duct

  • Set the air cleaner housing back into place.
  • Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the air cleaner housing bolts.
  • Reconnect the mass airflow sensor connector until it clicks.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool by hand to reseat any harness clips removed earlier.
  • Install the intake duct onto both ends.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to tighten both intake duct clamps securely.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to reinstall any small hose clamp removed earlier.
  • Push the engine cover back down onto its rubber mounts by hand.

Step 11: Reconnect the Battery

  • Use a battery terminal brush to clean the negative battery post and clamp if needed.
  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the terminal clamp nut until secure.
  • Apply battery terminal protectant to the terminal after tightening.
  • Battery terminal clamp torque is light; tighten securely but do not crush the clamp.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Bring the key fob back to the vehicle and press the brake pedal.
  • ✅ Start your CR-V and listen for a clean, quick crank with no grinding noise.
  • ✅ Let the engine idle for a few minutes so the idle system can stabilize after battery disconnect.
  • ✅ Check that the air intake duct is fully seated and that no warning lights stay on after a short drive.
  • ✅ If the auto-up window feature does not work, hold the window switch down fully, then up fully for a few seconds to relearn it.
  • ✅ Recheck the battery terminal and starter cable area for secure fitment after the first test start.
