  • Make sure you have the radio/security codes or saved settings if needed.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool before starting.

  • A trim clip removal tool helps remove plastic push clips without breaking them.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and tuck it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Always remove negative first.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Car

  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Use a floor jack at the front center jacking point to raise your Civic.
  • Place jack stands under the front side support points.
  • Gently lower the car onto the stands and shake the vehicle lightly to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Lower Splash Shield

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove the plastic clips from the lower engine splash shield.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove any splash shield bolts.
  • Lower the splash shield and set it aside.
  • Keep clips in a cup.

Step 4: Locate the Starter Motor

  • Use a work light to look at the front/lower side of the engine where it meets the transmission.
  • The starter is a short cylindrical motor with a thick battery cable attached to it.
  • Do not pull on the wiring. Identify the small control connector and the large battery cable terminal.

Step 5: Disconnect the Starter Wiring

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver gently if needed to release the small starter control connector lock.
  • Pull the small connector straight off by the connector body, not the wires.
  • Remove the protective rubber boot from the large starter terminal by hand.
  • Use a 12mm socket to remove the nut holding the large battery cable to the starter.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot touch metal.

Step 6: Remove the Starter Mounting Bolts

  • Support the starter with one hand because it is heavier than it looks.
  • Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3/8-inch extension to loosen the starter mounting bolts.
  • Remove the bolts fully and keep track of their positions.
  • If a bracket or cable guide blocks access, use the correct 12mm socket or 14mm socket to remove it carefully.

Step 7: Remove the Old Starter

  • Slide the starter straight out from the transmission housing.
  • Wiggle it gently by hand if it is stuck from dirt or corrosion.
  • Do not pry hard against the aluminum transmission case.
  • Compare the old and new starter side-by-side before installation.

Step 8: Install the New Starter

  • Position the new starter motor into the transmission housing by hand.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the starter mounting bolts.
  • Use a 3/8-inch torque wrench with a 14mm socket to tighten the starter mounting bolts to Torque to 45 Nm (33 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reconnect the Starter Wiring

  • Install the large battery cable onto the starter terminal.
  • Use a 12mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the starter terminal nut to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
  • Push the rubber boot fully over the starter terminal.
  • Reconnect the small control connector until it clicks.
  • Loose cables cause no-starts.

Step 10: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield

  • Lift the splash shield back into place by hand.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to help align plastic clips if needed.
  • Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the splash shield bolts snugly.
  • Replace broken clips with new underbody splash shield clips.

Step 11: Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack to lift the front slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands carefully.
  • Lower your Civic slowly to the ground with the floor jack.

Step 12: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the negative battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the terminal clamp snugly.
  • Apply battery terminal protector spray to help reduce corrosion.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Civic and listen for normal cranking. It should crank smoothly without grinding.
  • If it only clicks, recheck the battery terminals and starter cable connection.
  • If the starter grinds, stop immediately and recheck starter seating and bolt tightness.
  • Reset the clock and any saved window/auto settings if they were lost after battery disconnection.
  • Take a short test drive, then restart the engine once more to confirm the repair.
