🔧 Sienna - Starter Motor Replacement
The starter motor is mounted to the transaxle beneath the battery, battery tray, and air-cleaner assembly. Reaching it requires removing these components, disconnecting two electrical connections, and removing the starter mounting bolts.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery terminal before touching the starter. Its main cable is always powered and can cause severe arcing or fire.
- 🔥 Allow the engine and exhaust system to cool completely before beginning.
- 🔑 Keep the key fob away from your Sienna while working.
- 🧤 Wear safety glasses and insulated work gloves when handling the battery.
- ⚡ Never test the starter by bridging its terminals with a screwdriver.
- 📻 Battery disconnection may reset the clock, radio presets, power windows, and power-door settings.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Sienna on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off every electrical accessory.
- 🪟 Lower the driver’s window so you cannot accidentally lock yourself out after disconnecting the battery.
- ⏱️ Switch the ignition off and wait at least 90 seconds before disconnecting the battery.
- 📦 Remove loose items from the power sliding-door openings and leave both doors fully closed.
- 🔍 Compare the replacement starter with the original before installation. The nose, electrical terminals, and mounting holes must match.
- ℹ️ A battery registration or scan-tool setup is not required for this repair.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect and Remove the Battery
- Place the fender cover over the painted bodywork.
- Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative terminal clamp. Lift it off and position it where it cannot spring back onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm wrench to loosen and disconnect the positive terminal clamp.
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the battery hold-down fasteners and bracket.
- Lift the battery straight out with both hands. It is heavy, so keep it upright.
- Photograph cable routing before removing anything.
Step 2: Remove the Air Intake Duct
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to disconnect the small battery-tray or intake fasteners blocking access.
- Disconnect the mass-airflow sensor plug by pressing its locking tab. Do not pull on the wires.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or 8mm socket to loosen the intake-hose clamp at the throttle body.
- Release the air-cleaner cover clips by hand and remove the air filter.
- Detach any breather hose from the intake duct by releasing its clamp by hand.
- Lift the intake duct and air-cleaner cover away. Cover the exposed throttle-body opening with a clean, lint-free cloth.
- Never allow hardware into the intake opening.
Step 3: Remove the Air-Cleaner Housing and Battery Tray
- Use a 10mm socket, 3-inch extension, and ratchet to remove the lower air-cleaner housing bolts.
- Use a trim-clip removal tool to release any wiring clips attached to the housing or battery tray.
- Lift the lower air-cleaner housing out of the engine compartment.
- Use a 12mm socket, 6-inch extension, and ratchet to remove the battery-tray bolts.
- Lift out the battery tray. The starter is now visible where the engine joins the transaxle.
- Move wiring harnesses only as far as necessary. Do not stretch them.
Step 4: Disconnect the Starter Wiring
- Confirm again that the battery is completely removed.
- Press the lock and unplug the small starter-solenoid connector by hand. The solenoid is the small cylinder attached to the starter.
- Lift the protective rubber cap from the large starter terminal.
- Use a 12mm socket and ratchet to remove the nut securing the heavy positive cable.
- Lift the cable eyelet from the terminal and position it away from the starter.
- Inspect the eyelet for corrosion, looseness, or heat damage.
Step 5: Remove the Starter Motor
- Support the starter with one hand before removing the final mounting bolt.
- Use a 14mm socket, 6-inch extension, and ratchet to loosen and remove the two starter mounting bolts.
- Note each bolt’s position if their lengths differ.
- Pull the starter straight away from the transaxle, then carefully lift it out.
- Do not pry against the aluminum transaxle housing.
Step 6: Inspect the Mounting Area
- Use a clean cloth to wipe the starter mounting surface. Do not use abrasive tools on the aluminum housing.
- Inspect the visible ring-gear teeth through the opening. Look for severely chipped or missing teeth.
- Compare the old and new starters side by side. Verify matching mounting holes, pinion depth, connector, and terminal positions.
Step 7: Install the New Starter
- Position the new starter squarely against the transaxle housing.
- Start both mounting bolts several turns by hand. This prevents cross-threading in the aluminum housing.
- Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to tighten both bolts evenly.
- Use a 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the starter mounting bolts to 37 Nm (27 ft-lbs).
- Do not apply grease or thread-locking compound unless supplied with the replacement starter.
Step 8: Reconnect the Starter Wiring
- Place the heavy positive-cable eyelet over the large starter terminal.
- Start the terminal nut by hand, then use a 12mm socket and torque wrench to tighten it to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs).
- Do not allow the terminal stud to rotate while tightening.
- Refit the protective rubber cap so the powered terminal is completely covered.
- Push the small solenoid connector into place until its lock clicks.
Step 9: Reinstall the Battery Tray and Air Cleaner
- Position the battery tray without trapping any wiring underneath it.
- Use a 12mm socket and ratchet to reinstall and securely tighten its bolts.
- Position the lower air-cleaner housing and use a 10mm socket and ratchet to reinstall its bolts.
- Use a trim-clip removal tool by hand to press the released wiring clips back into their original holes.
- Reinstall the air filter, air-cleaner cover, intake duct, breather hose, and mass-airflow sensor connector.
- Use an 8mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver to tighten the intake-hose clamp until the hose cannot rotate. Do not crush the plastic duct.
- Remove the cloth from the throttle-body opening before connecting the duct.
Step 10: Reinstall and Connect the Battery
- Lower the battery into its tray with the terminals in their original positions.
- Reinstall the hold-down bracket using a 10mm socket and ratchet. Tighten it only until the battery cannot move.
- Clean the battery posts and clamps using the battery terminal cleaning brush.
- Connect the positive terminal first. Use a 10mm wrench and torque wrench to tighten it to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Connect the negative terminal last. Use a 10mm wrench and torque wrench to tighten it to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Apply a light coating of battery-terminal protectant after both clamps are secure.
✅ After Repair
- 🔍 Inspect the engine compartment for forgotten tools, loose connectors, or trapped wiring.
- 🚗 Start the engine. The starter should crank smoothly without grinding, clicking, or continuing to run after the engine starts.
- ⏳ Switch the engine off, wait 30 seconds, and perform two more starts.
- 🪟 Initialize each automatic window if needed: close it fully, then hold the switch in the UP position for approximately one second.
- 🚪 Check the power sliding doors and power liftgate. Cycle each fully closed and open if normal automatic operation was lost.
- 🕒 Reset the clock, radio presets, and other stored preferences as needed.
- ⚠️ If the starter only clicks, stop repeated attempts and check battery charge, terminal tightness, grounds, and starter connections.
