  • Park your TITAN on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool completely.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm wrench. Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery post.
  • Take pictures before unplugging connectors or removing hoses. These photos are very helpful during reassembly.
  • A fuel line disconnect tool releases spring-lock fuel fittings without bending or damaging them.
  • A torque wrench tightens bolts to the correct force so parts seal properly without breaking.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover

  • Use both hands to lift the engine cover straight upward from its rubber mounts.
  • Set the cover aside where it will not get scratched or stepped on.
  • Pull upward evenly.

Step 2: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
  • Remove the negative cable from the battery post.
  • Wrap the cable end with a shop towel so it cannot accidentally touch the battery.

Step 3: Remove the Air Intake Duct

  • Use a flathead screwdriver or 8mm socket to loosen the hose clamp at the throttle body.
  • Use a flathead screwdriver or 8mm socket to loosen the clamp at the air filter housing.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to release any small breather hose clamps attached to the intake duct.
  • Pull the intake duct off carefully and set it aside.

Step 4: Disconnect Throttle Body Wiring

  • Press the lock tab on the throttle body electrical connector and unplug it by hand.
  • If the connector sticks, use a pick tool gently at the locking tab only.
  • Do not pry on the wires.

Step 5: Remove the Throttle Body

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the throttle body bolts.
  • Move the throttle body aside carefully without pulling hard on any coolant hoses if they remain attached.
  • Remove and discard the old throttle body gasket.
  • During installation, tighten the throttle body bolts evenly to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).

Step 6: Label and Disconnect Intake Hoses

  • Use masking tape and a permanent marker to label each vacuum hose and connector.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to release spring clamps on small hoses.
  • Use a pick tool to gently loosen hoses that are stuck to fittings.
  • A vacuum hose carries engine suction and must be reconnected correctly to avoid rough idle.

Step 7: Relieve Fuel Line Tension and Disconnect Fuel Line if Needed

  • Place shop towels around the fuel connection area to catch small fuel drips.
  • Use the correct size from the fuel line disconnect tool set to release the fuel line connector if it blocks intake removal.
  • Cap or wrap the open line with a clean shop towel.
  • Keep sparks, flames, and hot lights away from the work area.

Step 8: Remove Intake Manifold Support Brackets and Harness Clips

  • Use a 10mm socket, 12mm socket, and extensions as needed to remove intake support bracket bolts.
  • Use a plastic trim tool to release wiring harness clips from the intake manifold.
  • Move wiring gently out of the way without stretching it.

Step 9: Remove the Upper Intake Manifold Bolts

  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch extension to loosen the upper intake manifold bolts.
  • Loosen bolts gradually in several passes, working from the outside toward the center.
  • Lift the intake manifold straight up once all bolts and hoses are free.
  • During installation, tighten the intake manifold bolts in stages to Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Cover the Intake Ports

  • Place clean shop towels over the exposed intake ports immediately.
  • Do not allow bolts, dirt, gasket pieces, or tools to fall into the engine.
  • Use a magnetic pickup tool right away if a metal fastener drops nearby.

Step 11: Locate the Starter Motor

  • The starter motor sits in the engine valley under the intake manifold area.
  • Identify the large battery cable and the smaller starter control wire on the starter solenoid.
  • The solenoid is the small cylinder attached to the starter that switches battery power to the starter motor.

Step 12: Disconnect Starter Electrical Connections

  • Use a 12mm socket or 13mm socket to remove the nut from the large starter battery cable terminal.
  • Pull the large cable off the starter stud and move it aside.
  • Press the tab and unplug the smaller starter control connector by hand.
  • If the connector is stuck, use a pick tool gently on the locking tab.
  • During installation, tighten the starter cable nut to Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).

Step 13: Remove the Starter Mounting Bolts

  • Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and extension to remove the starter mounting bolts.
  • Support the starter with one hand while removing the final bolt.
  • Lift the starter out of the valley area carefully.
  • During installation, tighten the starter mounting bolts to Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).

Step 14: Install the New Starter Motor

  • Set the new starter into position by hand.
  • Start both mounting bolts by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use a 14mm socket and torque wrench foot-pound to tighten the mounting bolts to Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).

Step 15: Reconnect Starter Wiring

  • Push the small starter control connector on until it clicks.
  • Install the large starter battery cable on the starter stud.
  • Use a 12mm socket or 13mm socket and torque wrench inch-pound to tighten the nut to Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal area only, not between metal contact surfaces.

Step 16: Clean Intake Sealing Surfaces

  • Remove the old intake gaskets by hand.
  • Use shop towels and engine intake cleaner to clean the sealing surfaces.
  • Do not scrape aggressively with metal tools.
  • Make sure all intake ports stay covered while cleaning.

Step 17: Install New Intake Manifold Gaskets

  • Remove the shop towels from the intake ports only after the area is clean.
  • Install the new upper intake manifold gaskets into their grooves by hand.
  • Verify each gasket sits flat and is not twisted.

Step 18: Reinstall the Upper Intake Manifold

  • Lower the intake manifold straight down into place by hand.
  • Start all intake bolts by hand before tightening.
  • Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench foot-pound to tighten the bolts gradually in a center-out pattern.
  • Tighten the intake manifold bolts to Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 19: Reconnect Hoses, Brackets, and Harness Clips

  • Use your tape labels and photos to reconnect every hose and connector.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to reinstall spring clamps in their original positions.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to reinstall intake support brackets.
  • Tighten small bracket bolts snugly unless a specific torque label is present.

Step 20: Reinstall the Throttle Body

  • Install the new throttle body gasket by hand.
  • Place the throttle body onto the intake manifold.
  • Start the bolts by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench inch-pound to tighten the bolts evenly to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect the throttle body electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 21: Reinstall the Air Intake Duct

  • Slide the intake duct onto the throttle body and air filter housing.
  • Use a flathead screwdriver or 8mm socket to tighten both hose clamps.
  • Reconnect any breather hoses using needle-nose pliers.

Step 22: Reconnect the Battery

  • Install the negative battery cable onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the terminal nut securely.
  • Do not over-tighten the battery terminal.

Step 23: Initial Start Check

  • Turn the ignition to ON for a few seconds, then OFF. Repeat once to allow systems to wake up.
  • Start the engine and listen for normal cranking.
  • If the engine cranks but idles rough, shut it off and check for disconnected vacuum hoses or intake leaks.
