📋 Before You Begin

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative clamp straight off. Use a battery terminal puller only if it is stuck; this tool lifts the clamp without damaging the battery post.
- Move the negative cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the battery.
- Use the 10mm socket to disconnect the positive terminal, then close its protective cover over the cable end.
- Do not twist or pry against the battery current sensor on the negative cable.
Step 2: Remove the Air-Intake Duct
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the intake-hose clamp at the air-cleaner housing.
- Use the screwdriver to loosen the clamp at the throttle-body end of the duct.
- Release the breather hose by hand. Use a trim-clip removal tool for any attached harness retainers.
- Lift the intake duct out without pulling on nearby wires.
- Photograph hose routing before removal.
Step 3: Remove the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the battery hold-down nuts.
- Remove the hold-down bar and place its hardware in a magnetic parts tray.
- Lift the battery straight upward with both hands. Keep it upright because battery electrolyte is corrosive.
Step 4: Remove the Battery Tray and Air Cleaner
- Unplug the air-cleaner electrical connector by pressing its locking tab. Do not pull on the wires.
- Use a trim-clip removal tool to release harness clips from the air-cleaner housing and battery tray.
- Use a 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet to remove the air-cleaner housing fasteners.
- Lift out the air-cleaner housing and cover the exposed intake opening with a clean lint-free cloth.
- Use a 10mm socket and extension to remove the battery-tray fasteners, then lift out the tray.
- Do not allow bolts, dirt, or tools to enter the exposed intake opening.
Step 5: Verify the Starter Has No Power
- Set the digital multimeter to DC volts. Touch the black probe to clean engine metal and the red probe to the starter’s large terminal.
- Confirm the reading is 0 volts before removing either starter wire.
- The large terminal is the direct battery feed; the small connector is the solenoid-control wire.
Step 6: Disconnect the Starter Wiring
- Pull back the protective rubber cap from the large starter terminal by hand.
- Use a 12mm socket and ratchet to remove the large cable-terminal nut.
- Lift the cable eyelet off the terminal and position it away from the starter.
- Press the locking tab and unplug the small solenoid connector by its plastic housing.
- Use a trim-clip removal tool to release any starter-harness retainer from its bracket.
Step 7: Remove the Starter Motor
- Support the starter with one hand.
- Use a 14mm socket, 6-inch extension, and ratchet to remove the two starter mounting bolts.
- Keep track of each bolt’s original location if their lengths differ.
- Pull the starter straight away from the transmission bellhousing, then lift it out through the battery-tray opening.
- Do not pry against the aluminum transmission case.
Step 8: Compare and Position the New Starter
- Place the old and new starters side by side. Confirm that the mounting flange, pinion gear, nose length, and electrical terminals match.
- Transfer any harness bracket from the old starter using the appropriate 10mm or 12mm socket.
- Place the new starter squarely against the bellhousing. It should sit flush without being forced.
- Install both mounting bolts by hand several turns to prevent cross-threading.
Step 9: Tighten the Starter and Connect Its Wires
- Use a 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten both starter mounting bolts evenly: Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs).
- Push the small solenoid connector into place until its lock clicks.
- Install the large cable eyelet flat against the starter terminal.
- Use a 12mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the terminal nut: Torque to 9.8 Nm (7.2 ft-lbs).
- Refit the protective rubber cap so the electrical terminal is completely covered.
- Secure all wiring retainers in their original positions.
Step 10: Reinstall the Battery Tray and Air Cleaner
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to reinstall the battery tray in its original position.
- Remove the lint-free cloth from the intake opening and confirm nothing has fallen inside.
- Reinstall the air-cleaner housing with the 10mm socket and ratchet.
- Reconnect its electrical connector and secure every harness clip.
- Do not overtighten fasteners installed in plastic components.
Step 11: Reinstall the Battery and Intake Duct
- Lower the battery into the tray with its terminals in their original positions.
- Install the hold-down bar. Use a 10mm socket to tighten its nuts evenly until the battery cannot move; do not crush the battery case.
- Reinstall the intake duct and breather hose.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to tighten both intake clamps until the duct cannot rotate. Do not deform the plastic duct.
Step 12: Reconnect the Battery
- Install the positive battery terminal first. Use a 10mm socket and tighten it until the clamp cannot rotate by hand.
- Close the positive-terminal protective cover.
- Install the negative terminal last. Use the 10mm socket and tighten it until the clamp cannot rotate.
- Keep tools from bridging a battery terminal to body metal.
✅ After Repair
- Confirm that no tools remain in the engine compartment and that all intake clamps and electrical connectors are secure.
- Turn the ignition on for a few seconds, then start the engine. The starter should crank smoothly without grinding or remaining engaged.
- If the starter does not operate, switch the ignition off immediately and recheck the battery terminals, large starter cable, and small solenoid connector.
- Set the clock and restore saved audio preferences if they were reset.
- Initialize each automatic window if needed: fully close the window, then hold the switch in the UP position for two additional seconds.
- Some warning lights may appear after battery reconnection. Start the engine and drive straight at low speed briefly; normal steering and stability-system initialization should clear them.
- Return the old starter as a core if the replacement supplier charges a refundable core deposit.
