  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable first, then the positive cable if needed. The starter cable carries very high current.
  • ⚠️ Never allow a wrench to touch the positive battery terminal and metal body at the same time.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool before working near the exhaust and engine block.
  • ⚠️ Support your Pilot securely with jack stands if raising the front. A floor jack alone is not safe.
  • ⚠️ Keep the key/fob away from the vehicle while working so no one accidentally tries to start it.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Pilot on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels before lifting the front.
  • Write down any radio presets if you want to save them. Disconnecting the battery may reset some settings.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool fully.
  • Disconnect the battery before touching starter wiring.
  • A starter solenoid is the small electrical switch on the starter that sends power to crank the engine.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
  • Remove the negative cable and move it away from the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the positive battery terminal only if you need more working clearance.
  • Negative cable comes off first.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Pilot at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front side support points.
  • Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
  • Keep the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum lightly touching the lift point as a backup.

Step 3: Remove the Lower Splash Shield

  • Put on safety glasses before working under the vehicle.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove plastic push clips from the lower splash shield.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove any lower shield bolts.
  • Lower the splash shield and set it aside.
  • A splash shield is the plastic panel under the engine that blocks water and road debris.

Step 4: Locate the Starter Motor

  • Use a shop light to look toward the lower front side of the engine/transmission area.
  • The starter is a small cylindrical motor mounted where the engine and transmission meet.
  • Find the thick battery cable attached to the starter solenoid terminal.
  • Take a phone photo before removing wires.

Step 5: Remove the Starter Electrical Connections

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to lift the rubber protective cap from the large starter terminal.
  • Use a 12mm socket to remove the nut holding the large battery cable to the starter.
  • Move the large cable aside so it cannot touch metal.
  • Use needle-nose pliers or your fingers to release the small starter signal connector.
  • Do not pull on the wire itself. Pull on the connector body.

Step 6: Remove the Starter Mounting Bolts

  • Support the starter with one hand because it is heavier than it looks.
  • Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch extension set, and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the accessible mounting bolt.
  • Use a 17mm socket with a 1/2-inch breaker bar if the larger mounting bolt is tight.
  • Remove both starter mounting bolts completely.
  • Carefully lower the starter from the engine bay.
  • Keep fingers clear as it drops free.

Step 7: Compare the Old and New Starter

  • Place both starters side by side on the ground.
  • Check that the bolt holes, electrical terminals, and drive gear position match.
  • Use a shop light to inspect the starter mounting surface on the engine.
  • Clean dirt from the mounting area by hand with a clean rag if needed.

Step 8: Install the New Starter

  • Lift the new starter into position by hand.
  • Start both mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 14mm socket or 17mm socket with the correct ratchet to snug the starter mounting bolts.
  • Use a torque wrench 10-100 ft-lb to tighten the starter mounting bolts to Torque to 64 Nm (47 ft-lbs).
  • Hand-start bolts before using tools.

Step 9: Reconnect the Starter Wiring

  • Push the small starter signal connector onto the new starter until it clicks.
  • Install the large battery cable onto the starter terminal.
  • Use a 12mm socket to tighten the starter terminal nut to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
  • Push the rubber protective cap fully over the terminal.
  • Make sure the large cable is not touching the exhaust or any moving parts.

Step 10: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield

  • Lift the splash shield back into position by hand.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to help align and reinstall the plastic push clips.
  • Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the splash shield bolts.
  • Snug the bolts gently. Do not overtighten plastic panels.

Step 11: Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower your Pilot slowly to the ground.
  • Remove the wheel chocks after the vehicle is fully on the ground.

Step 12: Reconnect the Battery

  • Apply battery terminal corrosion protectant to the battery terminals if available.
  • Install the positive battery cable first if it was removed.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the positive terminal clamp.
  • Install the negative battery cable last.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the negative terminal clamp.
  • Torque battery terminal clamps to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Pilot and listen for a strong, normal crank.
  • If it only clicks, recheck the battery cable connection at the starter and battery terminals.
  • Let the engine idle for a minute and confirm no warning lights stay on.
  • Reset the clock and radio presets if needed.
  • Drive normally and recheck that the battery terminals remain tight after the first trip.
