Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.

- Use a 10mm wrench to loosen and remove the positive battery terminal if more room is needed.
- Negative cable comes off first.

- Lift off the hold-down bracket and J-hooks.

- Lift the battery tray out of the engine bay.

Step 5: Locate the Starter Motor
- Use a shop light to look down toward the transmission bellhousing, which is the large metal case bolted to the engine.
- The starter is a small cylindrical motor with a thick battery cable and a smaller control wire attached.
- Check that the battery is still disconnected before touching the starter wiring.
Step 6: Disconnect the Starter Wiring
- Use your fingers or needle-nose pliers to unplug the small starter control connector.
- Pull on the connector body, not the wire.
- Lift the rubber protective boot from the large starter cable terminal.
- Use a 12mm socket or 12mm wrench to remove the large starter cable nut.

Step 7: Remove the Starter Mounting Bolts

- Place the old and new starter motors side by side on a clean surface.
- Confirm the mounting ears, electrical terminals, and gear nose shape match.

- Apply a small amount of dielectric grease around the connector seal, not directly on the metal contact surface.
Step 9: Install the New Starter
- Position the new starter into the bellhousing opening by hand.
- Start both mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the bolts.
- Use a torque wrench rated 5-80 Nm and 14mm socket to tighten the starter mounting bolts to Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Reconnect the Starter Wiring
- Install the large battery cable onto the starter terminal.
- Use a 12mm socket and torque wrench rated 5-80 Nm to tighten the terminal nut to Torque to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs).
- Push the rubber boot fully over the terminal.
- Plug in the small starter control connector until it clicks.
Step 11: Reinstall the Battery Tray
- Set the battery tray back into place.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3/8-inch extension to install the tray bolts.
- Tighten the tray bolts securely to Torque to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs).
Step 12: Reinstall the Air Cleaner Housing and Intake Duct
- Set the air cleaner housing and intake duct back into position.
- Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the air cleaner housing bolts.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to tighten the intake hose clamp at the throttle body.
- Use needle-nose pliers to reinstall any hose clamps.
- Use a trim clip removal tool or your fingers to reinstall plastic clips.
- Make sure the intake tube is fully seated so unfiltered air cannot enter the engine.
Step 13: Reinstall the Battery
- Place the battery back into the tray.
- Install the hold-down bracket and J-hooks.
- Use a 10mm socket to tighten the hold-down nuts evenly.
- Reconnect the positive battery terminal first and tighten with a 10mm wrench to Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal last and tighten with a 10mm wrench to Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Spray the terminals lightly with battery terminal protector spray.
Step 14: Final Check Before Starting
- Use a shop light to inspect the starter area for loose tools, loose wires, or disconnected hoses.
- Make sure the intake hose clamp is tight and the air cleaner housing is seated correctly.
- Confirm both battery terminals are tight and cannot rotate by hand.
