📋 Before You Begin

  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🔋 Open the hood and locate the battery. The negative terminal is marked with a minus symbol.
  • 📸 Take a photo of the starter wiring before removal if visible. This makes reassembly easier.
  • 🔧 A universal joint is a flexible socket adapter that helps reach bolts at an angle.
  • 🔧 A torque wrench tightens bolts to the correct force so they are not too loose or too tight.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Wrap the cable end with a clean rag if needed.
  • Always disconnect negative first.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the front center jacking point.
  • Raise the front of your Tucson high enough to work safely underneath.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the approved front support points.
  • Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
  • Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Push lightly on the vehicle to confirm it is stable before going underneath.

Step 3: Remove the Lower Engine Cover

  • Put on safety glasses and mechanic gloves.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the lower splash shield bolts.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool or flat-head screwdriver to remove plastic push clips.
  • Lower the cover and set it aside.
  • Keep clips in a cup.

Step 4: Locate the Starter Motor

  • Use a shop light and look near the lower engine/transmission bellhousing area.
  • The starter is a small cylindrical motor with a large battery cable and a smaller control wire attached.
  • If access is tight, use a 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension and shop light to plan your path before removing anything.

Step 5: Remove the Starter Electrical Connections

  • Use a 12mm socket or 12mm wrench to remove the nut from the large starter battery cable terminal.
  • Pull the large cable off the terminal and move it aside.
  • Press the release tab on the small starter solenoid connector and unplug it by hand.
  • If the connector is stuck, gently lift the lock tab with a flat-head screwdriver.
  • Do not pull on the wire itself. Pull on the connector body.

Step 6: Remove the Starter Mounting Bolts

  • Support the starter with one hand so it does not drop when the bolts come loose.
  • Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to loosen the starter mounting bolts.
  • If the upper bolt is angled or hard to reach, use a 3/8-inch drive universal joint with the 14mm socket.
  • Remove both mounting bolts and carefully lower the starter out of the vehicle.
  • Starter is heavier than it looks.

Step 7: Compare the Old and New Starter

  • Place both starters side by side on the ground.
  • Check that the mounting ears, electrical terminals, and gear nose match.
  • Use a shop light to inspect the mounting surface on the engine/transaxle.
  • Clean dirt from the mounting area by hand with a clean rag.

Step 8: Install the New Starter

  • Lift the new starter into position by hand.
  • Start both mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the bolts evenly.
  • Use a torque wrench 10-100 ft-lbs with the 14mm socket to tighten the starter mounting bolts to Torque to 42-54 Nm (31-40 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reconnect the Starter Wiring

  • Push the small solenoid connector onto the starter until it clicks.
  • Install the large battery cable onto the starter terminal.
  • Use a 12mm socket or 12mm wrench to tighten the large cable nut to Torque to 8-12 Nm (71-106 in-lbs).
  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease around the connector seal after it is seated. Dielectric grease helps keep moisture out of electrical connections.
  • Make sure the cable is not touching the exhaust, axle, or any moving parts.

Step 10: Reinstall the Lower Engine Cover

  • Raise the lower splash shield into place by hand.
  • Install the plastic clips by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to install the cover bolts.
  • Tighten the splash shield bolts snugly. Do not overtighten plastic shield fasteners.

Step 11: Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift your Tucson slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower the vehicle slowly to the ground with the floor jack.
  • Remove the wheel chocks.

Step 12: Reconnect the Battery

  • Use battery terminal cleaner on the battery post and cable clamp if corrosion is present.
  • Place the negative cable back onto the negative battery post.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the negative terminal clamp to Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs).
  • Make sure the terminal does not twist by hand after tightening.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Tucson. The engine should crank strongly and start normally.
  • 👂 Listen for grinding, clicking, or a spinning noise. Stop immediately if you hear abnormal starter noise.
  • 🔎 Check that the battery warning light turns off after startup.
  • 🔎 Inspect the starter area for loose wires or cables after the first start.
  • 🧠 If the battery was disconnected, reset the clock and any radio or driver display settings if needed.
  • 🚗 Take a short drive, then restart the engine several times to confirm the repair is consistent.
