🔧 F-150 - Starter Motor Replacement

Replacing the starter motor on your F-150 means removing the failed starter from the lower passenger-side area of the engine/transmission and installing a new one. The starter is a high-current electrical part, so disconnecting the battery correctly is important before touching any starter wiring.

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting. The starter cable is always capable of carrying very high current.
  • ⚠️ Let the exhaust and turbo-area components cool fully before working underneath.
  • ⚠️ Support your F-150 with jack stands. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses. Dirt and rust can fall while working under the truck.
  • ⚠️ Keep the ignition off and the key/fob away from the cab while working.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your F-150 on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and wait until the engine and exhaust are cool to the touch.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket. A negative battery cable is the black cable marked “-”.
  • If raising the truck, lift from an approved front frame lift point with the floor jack, then place jack stands under the frame rails.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Wrap the cable end with a clean rag if needed.
  • Always disconnect negative first.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Truck

  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your F-150 at the front frame area.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front frame rails.
  • Gently lower the truck onto the jack stands and shake the truck lightly to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Lower Splash Shield if Equipped

  • Use an 8mm socket to remove the lower shield fasteners.
  • Use a trim clip remover for plastic push clips. A trim clip remover is a small fork-shaped tool that removes plastic clips without breaking them.
  • Lower the shield and set it aside with the fasteners.

Step 4: Locate the Starter Motor

  • From underneath, look at the passenger side where the engine meets the transmission bellhousing.
  • The starter is a small cylindrical electric motor with a large battery cable attached to it.
  • Use a shop light to clearly see the wire terminals and mounting bolts.

Step 5: Remove the Starter Electrical Connections

  • Use a 13mm socket to remove the nut from the large battery cable terminal on the starter.
  • Pull the large cable straight off the stud and move it aside.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the smaller starter signal wire nut, if equipped with a nut-style terminal.
  • If the small wire uses a push connector, use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently release the locking tab, then unplug it.
  • Take a photo before removing wires.

Step 6: Remove the Starter Mounting Bolts

  • Support the starter with one hand because it can drop when the bolts come out.
  • Use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet, 6-inch extension, and universal joint to remove the starter mounting bolts.
  • A universal joint is a swivel adapter that helps the socket reach bolts at an angle.
  • Remove the lower bolt first, then the upper bolt.
  • Carefully lower the starter out of position.

Step 7: Compare the Old and New Starter

  • Place the old and new starter motors side by side.
  • Check that the mounting ears, electrical terminals, and drive gear location match.
  • Do not install the new starter if the mounting shape or terminals are different.

Step 8: Install the New Starter

  • Lift the new starter into position by hand.
  • Start both mounting bolts by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the bolts evenly.
  • Use a torque wrench 5-80 ft-lb to tighten the starter mounting bolts to Torque to 48 Nm (35 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reconnect the Starter Wiring

  • Install the large battery cable onto the starter stud.
  • Use a 13mm socket and torque wrench 5-80 ft-lb to tighten the large terminal nut to Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
  • Install the small starter signal wire.
  • Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench 5-80 ft-lb to tighten the small terminal nut to Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs), if nut-style.
  • If it uses a push connector, press it on until it clicks.
  • Make sure the wires are not touching the exhaust or any moving parts.

Step 10: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield

  • Raise the lower splash shield into position.
  • Use an 8mm socket to reinstall the shield fasteners.
  • Use a trim clip remover or your fingers to reinstall any plastic push clips.
  • Snug the fasteners by hand; do not overtighten plastic shield hardware.

Step 11: Lower the Truck

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Slowly lower your F-150 to the ground.

Step 12: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the terminal clamp until secure.
  • Apply battery terminal protector spray to the terminal after tightening.
  • Do not overtighten the battery clamp.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your F-150 and listen for a clean, fast crank.
  • If you hear one click or no crank, recheck the battery terminals and starter cable connections.
  • Check underneath to confirm no wiring is hanging near the exhaust or driveshaft.
  • Let the truck idle for a minute, then shut it off and restart it once more.
  • Reset clock or convenience settings if they changed after the battery disconnect.
