๐ Before You Begin

Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative battery-cable clamp.
- Lift the clamp off the negative battery terminal and position it where it cannot touch the battery.
- Do not disconnect starter wiring until the battery is isolated.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle
- Position a 3-ton floor jack under an approved front frame lifting point.
- Raise the front of your Tahoe high enough to reach the starter from below.
- Place 3-ton jack stands beneath both front frame rails, then lower the vehicle onto them.
- Push gently on the body to confirm the vehicle is stable before going underneath.
Step 3: Remove the Access Shield if Equipped
- Locate the starter low on the passenger side, next to the transmission bellhousing. The bellhousing is the large housing where the engine and transmission meet.
- Use a 10mm socket or trim-clip removal tool, as fitted, to remove any small starter heat shield or underbody panel blocking access.
- Keep the fasteners organized for installation.
Step 4: Label and Disconnect the Starter Wiring
- Support the rubber terminal boot and slide it away from the large starter-solenoid terminal.
- Use a 13mm deep socket to remove the nut from the large battery-cable terminal.
- Lift the large battery cable straight off the stud without twisting the stud.
- Use an 8mm socket to remove the small starter-control wire nut, then lift off the wire terminal.
- If the control wire uses a locking connector instead, release its tab carefully with a flat-blade screwdriver. Do not pull on the wire.
- Photograph wire routing before moving anything.
Step 5: Remove the Starter Mounting Bolts
- Hold the starter securely with one hand because it can drop when the bolts are removed.
- Use a 15mm socket, ratchet, and 6-inch extension to loosen the two starter mounting bolts.
- Use the 3/8-inch universal joint only if a straight approach is blocked. A universal joint lets the socket turn at an angle.
- Remove the easier bolt first, then support the starter while removing the final bolt.
Step 6: Remove the Old Starter
- Lower the starter slightly and rotate it until its nose clears the transmission bellhousing.
- Guide the starter out without forcing it against the transmission cooler lines, wiring harnesses, or exhaust components.
- Do not bend or pry on nearby metal fluid lines.
Step 7: Compare and Inspect the Parts
- Place the old and new starters side by side.
- Confirm the mounting flange, starter nose, electrical studs, connector arrangement, and pinion gear match.
- Inspect both mounting bolts and replace either bolt if its threads are stretched, flattened, or heavily corroded.
- Use a battery terminal cleaning brush to clean corrosion from the starter cable eyelets.
- Do not add shims unless the original installation had shims. Keep any original shims in their exact positions.
Step 8: Install the New Starter
- Guide the new starter into position and hold its mounting flange flat against the bellhousing.
- Start both mounting bolts by hand for several turns. This prevents cross-threading.
- Use a 15mm socket and ratchet to tighten the bolts evenly.
- Use a 3/8-inch drive torque wrench and 15mm socket to tighten both starter bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
- Start every mounting bolt by hand.
Step 9: Reconnect the Starter Wiring
- Install the small starter-control wire on its original terminal.
- Use an 8mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the small terminal nut to 3 Nm (27 in-lbs). Do not substitute 27 ft-lbs.
- Place the large battery-cable eyelet squarely over the large terminal stud.
- Use a 13mm deep socket and torque wrench to tighten the large terminal nut to 13 Nm (115 in-lbs).
- Do not allow either terminal stud to rotate while tightening.
- Push the rubber protective boot completely over the large terminal and verify the wires cannot contact the exhaust or moving parts.
Step 10: Reinstall Shields and Lower the Vehicle
- Reinstall any removed heat shield or underbody panel using the original fasteners and a 10mm socket or trim-clip removal tool, as applicable.
- Confirm no tools or loose fasteners remain beneath the vehicle.
- Use the 3-ton floor jack to raise your Tahoe slightly, remove both jack stands, and lower the vehicle slowly.
- Remove the wheel chocks after the vehicle is fully on the ground.
Step 11: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery-cable clamp fully onto the negative terminal.
- Use a 10mm socket to tighten the clamp until secure. Do not overtighten or deform the battery post.
- Apply a light coating of battery-terminal protectant after the connection is secure.
โ After Repair
- ๐ Check that all tools have been removed from the engine compartment and underneath your Tahoe.
- ๐ Start the engine. The starter should crank smoothly without grinding, clicking, or remaining engaged after the engine starts.
- ๐งช Switch the engine off and restart it two or three times to confirm consistent operation.
