- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
- Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- If your Sierra 1500 has an underbody shield/skid plate, plan to remove it for access.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and support the truck
- Lift the front of the truck with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Set it down securely onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Give the truck a firm shake test before getting underneath.
Step 2: Remove the lower shield (if equipped)
- Remove shield bolts with a 15mm socket (some shields also use clips).
- Pop any plastic retainers with a trim clip remover or flathead screwdriver.
- Keep fasteners grouped by location.
Step 3: Locate the starter and remove any heat shield (if equipped)
- Find the starter on the passenger side lower area of the engine/transmission.
- If there’s a starter heat shield, remove its fasteners with a 8mm socket or 10mm socket (varies by shield).
Step 4: Disconnect the starter wiring
- Confirm the negative battery cable is disconnected (use a 10mm socket if needed).
- Remove the small control wire nut (S-terminal) using an 8mm socket, then pull the connector off.
- Remove the main battery cable nut on the large terminal using a 13mm socket, then lift the cable off.
- Spray terminals with electrical contact cleaner and let them dry.
- Apply a light film of dielectric grease to the connection surfaces before reassembly.
Step 5: Remove the starter mounting bolts
- Support the starter with one hand.
- Remove the two starter mounting bolts using a 13mm socket, 3/8" drive ratchet, and a 3/8" drive extension.
- If access is tight on your 4WD, use the 3/8" drive universal joint (swivel) (a swivel is a joint that lets the socket bend to reach angled bolts).
Step 6: Remove the starter
- Lower the starter down and out carefully.
- Compare the new starter to the old one (same nose, terminals, and mounting holes).
Step 7: Install the new starter
- Position the new starter and start both mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten mounting bolts using a 13mm socket.
- Finish with a torque wrench: Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect the wiring
- Install the main battery cable on the large starter terminal and tighten with a 13mm socket: Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).
- Install the small control wire on the S-terminal and tighten with an 8mm socket: Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
- Reinstall the heat shield (if equipped) using an 8mm socket or 10mm socket.
Step 9: Reinstall the lower shield and lower the truck
- Reinstall the shield using a 15mm socket and any clips using a trim clip remover.
- Raise slightly with the floor jack, remove jack stands, then lower fully.
Step 10: Reconnect the battery
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.

- Start the engine and confirm it cranks strongly and starts normally.
- Listen for grinding/whining; if heard, shut off and recheck starter seating and bolt torque.
- Check that the battery cable at the starter is tight and the boot/cover is positioned correctly (if equipped).
- Clear any stored codes with a scan tool if the battery was disconnected and warning lights persist.
