📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Corolla on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Place the transmission in Park.
  • Install wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and allow the engine to cool.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing the starter.
  • A torque wrench is a tool that tightens bolts to a measured tightness so parts are not loose or over-tightened.
  • Dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease used around electrical connectors to help keep moisture out.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Use a battery terminal brush to clean corrosion if present.
  • Always disconnect negative first.

Step 2: Remove the Engine Appearance Cover if Equipped

  • If your Corolla has a plastic engine cover, pull upward by hand at the corners to release it from the rubber mounts.
  • Set the cover aside in a safe place.

Step 3: Remove the Air Intake Duct for Access

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp at the air intake duct.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to release any small hose clamps attached to the duct.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove any air duct retaining bolts.
  • Lift the duct out of the engine bay and set it aside.
  • Take a photo before unplugging parts.

Step 4: Raise the Front if You Need More Room

  • Use a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) at the front center jacking point if extra lower access is needed.
  • Place jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) under the front side pinch welds.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands and lightly shake the vehicle to confirm it is stable.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove lower splash shield clips if they block access.

Step 5: Locate the Starter Motor

  • The starter motor is mounted low on the engine/transaxle area, toward the front side of the engine bay.
  • Look for a small cylindrical motor with a thick battery cable attached to it.
  • Do not pull on the wires; only handle the connectors and terminals.

Step 6: Disconnect the Starter Electrical Connectors

  • Use your fingers or a flat-blade screwdriver gently to release the small starter solenoid connector tab.
  • A solenoid is the small electrical switch on the starter that engages the starter gear.
  • Pull the small connector straight off.
  • Open the protective rubber boot on the large starter cable terminal by hand.
  • Use a 12mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the nut from the large starter cable terminal.
  • Move the cable aside carefully.

Step 7: Remove the Starter Mounting Bolts

  • Support the starter with one hand so it does not fall when the bolts come out.
  • Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to remove the starter mounting bolts.
  • There are typically two main mounting bolts holding the starter to the transaxle housing.
  • Pull the starter straight away from the mounting surface and remove it from the engine bay.
  • Keep bolts organized by location.

Step 8: Compare the New Starter

  • Place the old and new starter motors side by side.
  • Confirm the mounting ears, electrical terminals, connector shape, and starter gear position match.
  • Do not install the new starter if the connector or mounting pattern does not match.

Step 9: Install the New Starter

  • Position the new starter against the transaxle housing by hand.
  • Start both mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the bolts evenly.
  • Use a 3/8-inch drive torque wrench with a 14mm socket to tighten the starter mounting bolts to Torque to 37 Nm (27 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Reconnect the Starter Wiring

  • Install the large starter cable onto the starter terminal.
  • Use a 12mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the terminal nut to Torque to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs).
  • Close the rubber protective boot fully over the terminal.
  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease around the small connector seal.
  • Push the small solenoid connector on until it clicks.

Step 11: Reinstall the Air Intake Duct

  • Place the air intake duct back into position.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall any duct retaining bolts.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to tighten the hose clamp until snug.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to reinstall any small hose clamps.
  • Make sure the duct is fully seated with no loose air leaks.

Step 12: Reinstall Shields and Lower the Vehicle

  • If removed, use a trim clip removal tool by hand to reinstall the lower splash shield clips.
  • Use the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).
  • Lower the vehicle slowly to the ground.

Step 13: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the negative battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to tighten the clamp snugly.
  • Do not over-tighten the battery terminal.
  • Apply battery terminal protector spray after the clamp is tight.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Corolla and listen for normal cranking speed.
  • If the engine does not crank, stop and recheck the battery terminals, starter cable nut, and small solenoid connector.
  • Confirm there are no warning lights related to charging or starting.
  • Let the engine idle for one minute and make sure the air intake duct is secure.
  • Reset the clock and radio presets if they were lost after battery disconnection.
  • Perform a short test drive, then restart the engine once more to confirm the repair.
