🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative (-) battery terminal and move it aside so it can’t spring back.
- “Negative off first” prevents accidental sparks.
Step 2: Remove the air intake duct (for access)
- Loosen the intake tube clamps using a flat trim tool (to lift clips) and a 10mm socket (for clamp screws if equipped).
- Unplug any connectors on the intake tube by pressing the tab and pulling straight off.
- Lift the duct out and set it aside.
- A “ratchet” is the handle that turns sockets.
Step 3: Locate the starter
- The starter sits where the engine meets the transmission, toward the front of the engine bay.
- Set up your 3/8" drive ratchet with a 3/8" drive extension set (3", 6", 10") as needed to reach it.
- An “extension” helps reach bolts in tight spots.
Step 4: Remove the starter’s electrical connections
- Remove the small control wire nut with a 12mm socket, then pull the connector/eyelet off.
- Remove the rubber boot from the large battery cable terminal, then remove the nut with a 12mm socket.
- Move the cables aside so they won’t get pinched during removal.
- Torque to 4.4 Nm (3.3 ft-lbs) for the small terminal nut during reassembly.
- Torque to 9.8 Nm (7.2 ft-lbs) for the main battery cable nut during reassembly.
Step 5: Remove the starter mounting bolts
- Use a 14mm socket with a 3/8" drive extension set (3", 6", 10") to remove the two starter mounting bolts.
- If one bolt is hard to line up on, use the universal joint adapter for 3/8" drive to angle the socket (a “universal joint” bends to reach around obstacles).
- Support the starter with your free hand as the last bolt comes out.
- Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs) for the starter mounting bolts during reassembly.
Step 6: Remove the starter motor
- Wiggle the starter out of its pocket and lift it out from the top.
- Compare the old and new starters (mounting holes, electrical studs, nose length) before installing.
Step 7: Install the new starter
- Set the new starter into position by hand.
- Start both mounting bolts by hand first (this prevents cross-threading).
- Tighten with a 14mm socket and finish with a torque wrench (10-80 ft-lbs range): Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect the starter wiring
- Install the main battery cable on the large terminal and tighten with a 12mm socket: Torque to 9.8 Nm (7.2 ft-lbs).
- Install the small control wire and tighten with a 12mm socket: Torque to 4.4 Nm (3.3 ft-lbs).
- Re-seat the rubber boot over the main terminal so it can’t short against metal.
Step 9: Reinstall the air intake duct
- Reinstall the intake duct and tighten clamps using a 10mm socket.
- Reconnect any connectors you unplugged (push until they click).
Step 10: Reconnect the battery
- Install anti-corrosion pads (optional) and reconnect the negative terminal using a 10mm socket.
- Make sure the terminal is snug and doesn’t rotate by hand.
✅ After Repair
- 🧪 Start the engine several times and confirm strong, consistent cranking.
- 🧪 Check that no warning lights appear and that the intake duct is fully seated (no hissing/rough idle).
- 🧪 Recheck the starter main cable boot is covering the terminal completely.
- 🧪 If you lifted the car, remove tools, lower it safely, and recheck for any loose items in the engine bay.
