🔧 Edge - Starter Motor Replacement

Replacing the starter motor on your Edge means removing the failed starter from the lower engine/transmission area and installing a new one so the engine can crank normally again. On the 2.0L EcoBoost AWD layout, access is tight, so careful battery isolation and safe lifting are very important.

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the starter. The main starter cable is always hot when the battery is connected.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine, turbo area, and exhaust cool completely before working underneath.
  • ⚠️ Support your Edge with jack stands only. Never work under a vehicle held up by a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ The starter is heavy for its size. Keep one hand supporting it when removing the final mounting bolt.
  • ⚠️ If your Edge has recent battery memory settings, you may need to reset auto-up windows, clock, and some infotainment preferences after reconnecting the battery.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Edge on a level surface, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool fully.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket. Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the battery post.
  • A universal joint is a small swivel adapter that helps your socket reach bolts at an angle.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Support the Front

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Edge at the front subframe lift point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the proper front support points.
  • Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands and shake the vehicle lightly to confirm it is stable.
  • Put on safety glasses and mechanic gloves.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Splash Shield

  • Use an 8mm socket to remove the lower splash shield fasteners.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to release any plastic push clips.
  • Lower the splash shield and set it aside.
  • Keep fasteners grouped by location.

Step 3: Locate the Starter

  • Use a work light and look near the lower side of the engine where it meets the transmission bellhousing.
  • The starter is a small electric motor with a thick battery cable and a smaller control wire attached to it.
  • Before removal, take a photo of the wire routing with your phone so reinstalling is easier.

Step 4: Disconnect the Starter Electrical Connections

  • Confirm the negative battery cable is still disconnected.
  • Use a 13mm socket to remove the nut from the large starter battery cable terminal.
  • Move the large cable aside without bending it sharply.
  • Use a 10mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver, depending on connector style, to release the smaller starter control wire.
  • Inspect the cable ends for corrosion. Clean lightly with a battery terminal brush if needed.

Step 5: Remove the Starter Mounting Bolts

  • Support the starter with one hand.
  • Use a 15mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to loosen the starter mounting bolts.
  • If access is angled, add the 3/8-inch drive universal joint between the extension and socket.
  • Remove the lower bolt first, then remove the upper bolt while holding the starter.
  • Carefully lower the starter out of the engine bay.

Step 6: Compare the New Starter

  • Place the old and new starter motor side by side.
  • Confirm the mounting ears, gear position, electrical terminal locations, and connector style match.
  • Do not install the new starter if the terminal layout or mounting pattern is different.
  • Match before installing.

Step 7: Install the New Starter

  • Position the new starter into the bellhousing opening by hand.
  • Start both mounting bolts by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use a 15mm socket, 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the bolts evenly.
  • Use a torque wrench 10-100 Nm with a 15mm socket to tighten the starter mounting bolts to Torque to 48 Nm (35 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect Starter Wiring

  • Install the large starter battery cable onto the main starter terminal.
  • Use a 13mm socket and torque wrench 10-100 Nm to tighten the main cable nut to Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect the smaller starter control wire until it clicks or seats fully.
  • If equipped with a small retaining nut, use a 10mm socket and tighten it to Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Apply a light coat of battery terminal protectant to exposed cable terminals if needed.

Step 9: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield

  • Lift the lower splash shield back into position.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool by hand to reinstall plastic push clips.
  • Use an 8mm socket to reinstall the splash shield screws.
  • Snug the screws only. Do not overtighten plastic shield fasteners.

Step 10: Lower the Vehicle and Reconnect Battery

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower your Edge fully to the ground.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Use a torque wrench 10-100 Nm with a 10mm socket to tighten the battery terminal nut to Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Edge and listen for a strong, clean crank with no grinding noise.
  • If the engine does not crank, recheck the large starter cable, small control wire, and battery terminal connection.
  • Check underneath for any loose splash shield fasteners or tools left behind.
  • Reset the clock and any driver preferences if they were lost after battery disconnect.
  • Test the power windows. If auto-up/down does not work, hold each window switch down fully, then up fully for a few seconds to relearn travel.
