🔧 4Runner - Starter Motor Replacement

The starter motor is mounted low on the passenger side of the engine, where it engages the transmission’s flywheel to crank the engine. Replacement is completed through the passenger-side wheel well and from underneath your 4Runner.

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery terminal before touching the starter. Its main cable carries full battery current and can cause severe burns or fire.
  • 🧊 Let the engine and exhaust cool completely before working beside the exhaust manifold.
  • 🛑 Support your 4Runner with jack stands. Never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
  • 🔑 Keep the ignition off and the key away from the vehicle while working.
  • 🧤 Wear safety glasses and mechanic’s gloves because dirt may fall from the wheel well and underbody.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your 4Runner on firm, level ground. Shift into Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off all electrical accessories.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks securely in front of and behind the driver-side rear tire.
  • 🛞 Loosen the passenger-front wheel nuts slightly before raising the vehicle.
  • 🔋 Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Wait at least 90 seconds before handling starter wiring.
  • 📻 Disconnecting the battery may reset the clock, radio presets, and automatic window function.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative clamp from the battery post and position it where it cannot spring back into contact.
  • The negative terminal is marked with a minus symbol and normally has a black cable.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the front-center frame crossmember to raise your 4Runner.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the left and right front frame rails.
  • Lower the vehicle onto the stands, then gently push the body to confirm it is stable.
  • Leave the floor jack lightly touching the crossmember as a secondary precaution.

Step 3: Remove the Passenger-Front Wheel

  • Use a 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar to remove the six wheel nuts.
  • Lift off the wheel and place it flat beneath the frame as an additional safety measure.

Step 4: Open the Starter Access Area

  • Use a trim-clip removal tool and flat-blade screwdriver to remove the passenger-side wheel-well splash-shield clips.
  • Fold the flexible splash shield aside without tearing it. This exposes the passenger side of the engine and transmission bellhousing.
  • If the lower engine cover blocks access, use a 12mm socket, ratchet, and extension to remove its retaining bolts, then lower the cover.
  • Keep each clip and bolt grouped by location for installation.
  • Photograph clip locations before removal.

Step 5: Locate and Identify the Starter Connections

  • Use a work light through the wheel-well opening to locate the cylindrical starter at the junction between the engine and transmission.
  • Identify the thick battery cable beneath its rubber terminal cap and the smaller solenoid-control connector.
  • The solenoid is the smaller cylinder attached to the starter; it switches battery power and moves the starter gear.

Step 6: Disconnect the Starter Wiring

  • Pull the rubber cap away from the main starter terminal by hand.
  • Use a 12mm socket, ratchet, and extension to remove the main cable retaining nut.
  • Lift the cable eyelet off the terminal and move it aside without sharply bending the cable.
  • Press the locking tab on the small control connector and pull the connector straight off. Use a flat-blade screwdriver only if the tab cannot be pressed by hand.
  • Do not pull on the connector’s wire.

Step 7: Remove the Starter Motor

  • Support the starter with one hand before removing the final mounting bolt. The starter is heavier than it appears.
  • Use a 14mm socket, ratchet, 12-inch extension, and universal-joint adapter to loosen the upper starter mounting bolt.
  • Use a 14mm socket, ratchet, and 6-inch extension to loosen the lower mounting bolt.
  • Remove both bolts while keeping the starter supported.
  • Pull the starter straight away from the transmission, rotate it as needed, and guide it out through the wheel-well opening or lower opening.
  • Do not pry against the aluminum housing.

Step 8: Compare and Position the New Starter

  • Place the old and new starters side by side.
  • Confirm that the mounting flange, gear, electrical terminals, connector, and overall housing orientation match.
  • Use a clean mechanic’s glove to wipe loose dirt from the mounting surface. Do not apply grease or sealant.
  • Guide the new starter into place and seat its mounting flange squarely against the transmission housing.

Step 9: Install the Starter Mounting Bolts

  • Start both mounting bolts by hand for several turns to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use a 14mm socket, extensions, universal-joint adapter, and ratchet to snug both bolts evenly.
  • Use a torque wrench rated 5-80 ft-lbs with the 14mm socket to tighten both starter mounting bolts to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Reconnect the Starter Wiring

  • Push the small control connector onto the solenoid until its lock clicks.
  • Place the main battery-cable eyelet squarely over the threaded starter terminal.
  • Install the retaining nut by hand, then use a torque wrench and 12mm socket to tighten it to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten the terminal because its insulated stud can crack or rotate inside the solenoid.
  • Push the rubber protective cap completely over the terminal.

Step 11: Reinstall the Splash Shield and Lower Cover

  • Position the wheel-well splash shield and install its clips using the trim-clip removal tool or your fingers.
  • If removed, hold the lower engine cover in place and start all bolts by hand.
  • Use the 12mm socket and torque wrench to tighten factory lower-cover mounting bolts to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).
  • Confirm that no shield, cable, or hose is loose near the exhaust or steering components.

Step 12: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Place the passenger-front wheel onto the hub and install all six wheel nuts by hand.
  • Use a 21mm deep socket and ratchet to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Use the floor jack to raise the vehicle slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower your 4Runner fully.
  • Use a torque wrench and 21mm deep socket to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery clamp fully onto the battery post.
  • Use a torque wrench and 10mm socket to tighten the negative-terminal clamp to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
  • Confirm the clamp cannot rotate by hand. Do not overtighten it.

✅ After Repair

  • 🚗 Start the engine and listen for quick, smooth cranking without grinding, clicking, or continued starter operation.
  • 🔍 Switch the engine off and inspect the starter area for a loose cable, displaced terminal cap, or abnormal smell.
  • 🪟 Restore the automatic window function if needed: fully lower each affected window, then fully raise it and hold the switch up for approximately one second.
  • 🕒 Reset the clock and radio presets if they were erased.
  • 🔩 Recheck the passenger-front wheel-nut torque after approximately 50-100 km of driving.
  • ⚠️ If the starter still only clicks or cranks slowly, test the battery, battery cables, grounds, starter relay, and charging system before replacing anything else.
