⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Allow the engine and exhaust components to cool completely.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the starter. Its main cable remains electrically live when the battery is connected.
- Keep tools away from the positive battery terminal and starter power terminal.
- Place the transmission in Park and apply the parking brake.
- Never work underneath a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
- The starter is heavy for its size. Support it while removing the final bolt.

- Park your Outback on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off all electrical accessories.
- Open the hood and keep the ignition key away from the vehicle.
- Wait at least 60 seconds after switching off the ignition before disconnecting the battery.
- Make sure the replacement starter matches the original mounting flange, electrical terminals, and pinion gear.
- No scan tool, starter coding, or infotainment service mode is required.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative clamp from the battery post and position it where it cannot spring back into contact.
- Use the battery terminal brush to clean visible corrosion from the clamp if necessary.
- Do not disconnect the positive terminal unless extra working clearance is required.
Step 2: Remove the Air-Intake Duct
- Use the 8mm socket and ratchet to loosen the air-intake hose clamp at the throttle-body end.
- Use the small flat-blade screwdriver or plastic trim-clip removal tool to release the intake-air duct clips without forcing them.
- Disconnect any breather hose attached to the duct by gripping the hose itself, not the plastic fitting.
- Lift out the intake duct and place it somewhere clean.
- Cover the exposed intake opening with a clean, lint-free covering so nothing can fall inside.
Step 3: Locate and Inspect the Starter
- Find the starter at the upper rear of the engine where the engine joins the transmission.
- Use a flashlight to identify the thick battery cable, the small solenoid-control connector, and the two starter mounting bolts.
- Check the cable routing and take a reference photo before disconnecting anything.
- Match every connection before removing it.
Step 4: Disconnect the Starter Wiring
- Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to release the locking tab on the small solenoid-control connector. Pull on the connector housing, not its wire.
- Lift the rubber protective cap from the large starter terminal.
- Use the 12mm socket, extension, and ratchet to remove the nut securing the thick battery cable.
- Lift the cable eyelet from the terminal and move it aside without sharply bending the cable.
- Inspect the eyelet for corrosion, looseness, or heat damage.
Step 5: Remove the Starter Motor
- Support the starter with one hand.
- Use the 14mm socket, extension, and ratchet to loosen the two starter mounting bolts.
- Remove the easier-to-reach bolt first, then remove the final bolt while holding the starter securely.
- Pull the starter straight away from the transmission bellhousing. Rock it gently by hand if the locating surface is stuck.
- Do not pry against wiring, aluminum housings, or the starter sealing surface.
Step 6: Compare the New and Old Starters
- Place both starters side by side and compare the mounting flange, bolt holes, electrical terminals, nose housing, and pinion gear.
- Confirm that no shipping cap or packaging remains on the replacement starter.
- Use the small flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to transfer an undamaged terminal cap or wiring retainer.
- Do not energize the loose starter with jumper cables.
Step 7: Install the Replacement Starter
- Position the replacement starter squarely against the transmission bellhousing.
- Install both mounting bolts by hand for several turns. This prevents cross-threading the aluminum housing.
- Use the 14mm socket, extension, and ratchet to seat both bolts evenly.
- Use the 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten both starter mounting bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
- Start every bolt by hand.
Step 8: Reconnect the Starter Wiring
- Place the thick battery-cable eyelet squarely over the large starter terminal.
- Install the terminal nut by hand, then use the 12mm socket and torque wrench to tighten it to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
- Hold the cable in its natural position while tightening. Do not allow the terminal stud to rotate.
- Refit the rubber protective cap so the terminal is completely covered.
- Push the small solenoid-control connector into place until its lock clicks.
Step 9: Reinstall the Air-Intake Duct
- Remove the covering from the intake opening and verify that nothing has entered it.
- Position the air-intake duct fully over its connections.
- Reconnect the breather hose by hand and verify that it is not twisted or pinched.
- Reinstall the duct clips using the plastic trim-clip removal tool to press them into place gently.
- Use the 8mm socket and ratchet to tighten the intake clamp until secure. Do not crush the plastic duct.
Step 10: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery clamp fully down on the battery post.
- Use the 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the negative-terminal clamp to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
- Check that the clamp cannot rotate by hand. Do not overtighten it.
✅ After Repair
- Verify that all tools have been removed from the engine compartment.
- Turn the ignition to ON for several seconds, then start the engine. The starter should crank smoothly without grinding or clicking.
- Switch the engine off and restart it two more times to confirm consistent operation.
- Inspect the starter cable and battery terminals for movement, heat, smoke, or sparking.
- If the driver’s automatic window function was lost, close the window completely, then hold the switch in the UP position for about one second.
- If the starter grinds, continues running, or produces smoke, switch off the ignition immediately and disconnect the negative battery cable.
