📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Outback on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- If equipped with an aftermarket radio security code, make sure you have the code before disconnecting the battery.
- Disconnecting the battery may reset clock, radio presets, and automatic window memory.
- A torque wrench is a tool that tightens bolts to a measured tightness so they are not too loose or too tight.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Put on safety glasses and mechanic gloves.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post. If it is stuck, use a battery terminal puller (specialty).
- Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the battery post.
- Negative cable comes off first.
Step 2: Remove the Engine Cover and Intake Ducting
- Use a flathead screwdriver or trim clip removal tool to release any plastic clips holding the front air intake snorkel.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the intake duct fasteners if installed.
- Loosen the air intake hose clamp with a flathead screwdriver.
- Move the intake ducting out of the way to create room above the transmission area.
- Take photos before removing hoses.
Step 3: Locate the Starter
- Use a shop light and look down at the driver-side rear area of the engine bay, where the engine meets the transmission.
- The starter is a small cylindrical motor mounted to the transmission bellhousing. The bellhousing is the metal case between the engine and transmission.
- Find the thick battery cable attached to the starter solenoid. The solenoid is the smaller cylinder mounted on the starter that switches power to the starter motor.
Step 4: Disconnect the Starter Electrical Connections
- Use a 12mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3/8-inch 6-inch extension to remove the nut holding the large battery cable to the starter.
- Lift the large cable off the starter stud and move it aside.
- Use needle-nose pliers to gently release the small starter signal wire connector if it has a locking tab.
- Pull the small connector straight off by the plastic connector body.
- Inspect the cable ends for corrosion. Use a wire brush to clean light corrosion.
- Do not yank the wires.
Step 5: Remove the Starter Mounting Bolts
- Support the starter with one hand so it does not drop when the bolts come loose.
- Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3/8-inch 10-inch extension to loosen the upper starter mounting bolt.
- Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3/8-inch 6-inch extension to remove the lower starter mounting bolt.
- Remove both bolts fully and keep them organized.
- Lift the starter out of the engine bay.
- Starter is heavier than it looks.
Step 6: Compare the Old and New Starter
- Place both starters side by side on a clean surface.
- Check that the mounting ears, electrical stud location, small connector location, and gear nose match.
- Do not install the new starter if the mounting shape or electrical connections are different.
Step 7: Install the New Starter
- Lower the new starter into position by hand.
- Start both mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading. Cross-threading means the bolt is going in crooked and can damage the threads.
- Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3/8-inch extension to snug the starter bolts evenly.
- Use a torque wrench 10-80 ft-lb and 14mm socket to tighten the starter mounting bolts to Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect the Starter Wiring
- Push the small starter signal connector onto the starter until it is fully seated.
- Install the large battery cable onto the starter stud.
- Use a 12mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and torque wrench 10-80 ft-lb to tighten the starter terminal nut to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
- Apply a small amount of dielectric grease around the connector area, not between the metal contact surfaces.
- Clean, tight connections matter.
Step 9: Reinstall the Intake Ducting
- Reinstall the air intake ducting into its original position.
- Use a flathead screwdriver to tighten the intake hose clamp until snug.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall any intake duct fasteners.
- Use a trim clip removal tool by hand to help line up clips, then press the clips into place.
- Make sure no hoses or wiring are trapped under the ducting.
Step 10: Reconnect the Battery
- Use a wire brush to clean the battery terminal if it has visible corrosion.
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the negative battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to tighten the clamp until it cannot rotate by hand.
- Apply battery terminal protectant to the outside of the terminal connection.
- Do not overtighten battery clamps.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Outback. The engine should crank strongly and start normally.
- Listen for grinding, clicking, or a starter that stays engaged after the engine starts. Shut the engine off immediately if that happens.
- Check that the intake ducting is secure and that no warning lights remain on after the engine starts.
- Reset the clock and radio presets if needed.
- Initialize the power window auto function if it stops working: turn the ignition ON, fully lower the window, then fully raise it and hold the switch up for about 1 second.
- Test-start the vehicle 3-5 times with short cool-down pauses between starts.
