Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover and Air Intake
- Lift the plastic engine cover straight upward by hand to release its rubber mounts.
- Press the lock and unplug the mass-airflow sensor connector by hand.
- Use hose-clamp pliers to disconnect the crankcase breather hose.
- Use a 10mm socket or Phillips #2 screwdriver to loosen the air-duct clamps.
- Release the air-cleaner clips by hand, then remove the upper housing and intake duct.
- Cover the exposed air-cleaner opening with a lint-free shop towel.
Step 2: Remove the Throttle Body
- Press the lock and unplug the electronic throttle connector by hand. Do not pull on the wires.
- Use hose-clamp pliers to release the throttle-body coolant-hose clamps.
- Use a 90-degree hose pick to loosen the hoses gently. A hose pick is a small hooked tool used to separate stuck rubber hoses from their fittings.
- Plug or elevate the hoses to reduce coolant loss.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the throttle-body fasteners.
- Remove the throttle body and discard its gasket.
- Do not force the electronic throttle plate open.
Step 3: Disconnect the Manifold Wiring and Hoses

Step 4: Disconnect the Fuel Supply Line
- Place several lint-free shop towels beneath the fuel-line connection.
- Use the fuel-line disconnect tool to release the connector lock. This tool separates the quick-connect fitting without damaging its internal seal.
- Separate the line slowly because a small amount of residual pressure may remain.
- Cap both openings immediately to keep dirt out.
- Move fuel-soaked towels outside the work area.
Step 5: Remove the Fuel Rails and Injectors
- Use a 12mm socket and extension to remove the fuel-rail retaining bolts.
- Lift each rail evenly so the injectors remain straight. Do not pry against an injector.
- Place the rails and injectors on clean, lint-free shop towels.
- Use a plastic trim-removal tool to remove the old injector O-rings and insulators without scratching the injectors.
- Never reuse removed injector O-rings.
Step 6: Remove the Intake Manifold
- Use 10mm and 12mm sockets with extensions to remove the manifold supports, nuts, and bolts.
- Arrange the fasteners in their original positions because their lengths may differ.
- Check all sides of the manifold for overlooked hoses, connectors, and brackets.
- Lift the intake manifold straight upward. Use a plastic trim-removal tool only if gentle separation is needed.
- Immediately cover all eight intake ports with clean, lint-free shop towels.
- Remove the old intake gaskets by hand.
- Use a plastic gasket scraper to clean the mating surfaces. Do not allow debris to enter the ports.
Step 7: Disconnect the Starter Wiring
- Verify that the negative battery cable remains isolated.
- Press the lock and unplug the small starter-solenoid connector by hand.
- Open the starter-terminal protective cap by hand.
- Use a 12mm deep socket to remove the large starter-cable nut.
- Lift the cable eyelet straight off without twisting the copper terminal.
Step 8: Remove the Starter Motor
- Support the starter with one hand.
- Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and extension to remove both starter mounting bolts.
- Lift the starter out of the engine valley.
- Inspect the valley for coolant or oil. Repair any active leak before installing the new starter.

Step 9: Install the New Starter Motor
- Compare the old and new starters. The pinion, flange, connectors, and terminal positions must match.
- Place the new starter squarely against its mounting surface.
- Start both mounting bolts several turns by hand to prevent damaged threads.
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the mounting bolts to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
- Install the large cable, then use a 12mm deep socket and 1/4-inch torque wrench to tighten its nut to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs).
- Close the protective cap and reconnect the solenoid connector by hand until it clicks.
- Overtightening can break the copper terminal.
Step 10: Reinstall the Intake Manifold

- Install the new intake manifold gaskets by hand.
- Lower the manifold straight into position without sliding or pinching the gaskets.

- Use 10mm and 12mm sockets to reinstall the original manifold supports and brackets.
Step 11: Reinstall the Fuel Rails
- Apply a thin film of clean engine oil to each new injector O-ring.
- Install the new O-rings and insulators by hand without twisting them.
- Position the rails and press the injectors straight into their openings evenly.
- If an injector binds, remove it and inspect its O-ring. Never force it into place.
- Use a 12mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the fuel-rail bolts to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
- Push the fuel-line connector together by hand until it clicks.
- Install the new connector retainer, then pull gently on the connection to confirm it is locked.
Step 12: Reconnect the Wiring and Hoses
- Use your labels and photographs to route the wiring exactly as originally installed.
- Reconnect every injector, sensor, and actuator connector by hand until it clicks.
- Use 10mm and 12mm sockets to reinstall the wiring and hose brackets.
- Reconnect all vacuum, ventilation, evaporative-emissions, and brake-booster hoses by hand.
- Use hose-clamp pliers to return each clamp to its original position.
- Verify that no hose or harness is trapped beneath the intake manifold.
Step 13: Reinstall the Throttle Body
- Install a new throttle-body gasket and position the throttle body.
- Start all fasteners by hand.
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch torque wrench to tighten the fasteners evenly to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Reconnect the coolant hoses and position their clamps with hose-clamp pliers.
- Reconnect the electronic throttle connector by hand until it clicks.
Step 14: Reinstall the Air Intake
- Remove the protective shop towel from the air-cleaner opening.
- Install the intake duct and upper air-cleaner housing.
- Use a 10mm socket or Phillips #2 screwdriver to tighten the duct clamps securely.
- Reconnect the breather hose and position its clamp with hose-clamp pliers.
- Reconnect the mass-airflow sensor connector by hand until it clicks.
Step 15: Refill the Cooling System
- Close the radiator drain by hand. Do not overtighten the plastic valve.
- Use a clean funnel to refill the radiator with Toyota-compatible pink premixed coolant.
- Fill the coolant reservoir to the cold-level mark.
- Check the throttle-body hoses and radiator drain for leaks.
Step 16: Reconnect the Battery and Pressurize the Fuel System
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch torque wrench to reconnect the negative battery terminal to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Switch the ignition on for five seconds without starting the engine, then switch it off for ten seconds. Repeat this three times.

- If you see fuel or smell a strong fuel odor, switch the ignition off and disconnect the battery immediately.
Step 17: Start and Inspect the Engine
