🔧 Focus - Starter Motor Replacement

Replacing the starter motor on your Focus means removing the old electric motor that cranks the engine and installing a new one. This repair is usually done when the engine will not crank, cranks intermittently, or you hear a single click when turning the key.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the starter wiring. The starter has a direct battery cable and can spark strongly.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine and exhaust cool before working underneath the front of your Focus.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands. Never work under a vehicle held up only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses because dirt and rust can fall while working under the engine.
  • ⚠️ If your Focus has an engine splash shield, remove it carefully so the clips and fasteners do not break.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • 8mm socket
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension
  • 3/8-inch drive universal joint
  • 13mm wrench
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Torque wrench rated 10-100 Nm
  • Floor jack rated 2-ton minimum
  • Jack stands rated 2-ton minimum
  • Wheel chocks
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Battery terminal brush

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Starter motor - Qty: 1
  • Starter mounting bolts - Qty: 2, replace if damaged or heavily corroded
  • Battery terminal protectant - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Focus on level ground, shift to Park or Neutral as equipped, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels to stop the car from rolling.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool fully.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket. The negative cable is usually marked with a minus symbol.
  • A universal joint is a small swivel adapter that helps your socket reach bolts at an angle.
  • A torque wrench tightens bolts to the correct tightness so they are not too loose or overtightened.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Use a battery terminal brush to clean the cable end if it has white or green corrosion.
  • Always disconnect negative first.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Vehicle

  • Place wheel chocks behind both rear wheels.
  • Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the front jacking point to raise the front of your Focus.
  • Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the proper front support points.
  • Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands and give the car a light shake to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Lower Splash Shield

  • Put on safety glasses and work gloves.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove plastic push clips from the lower splash shield.
  • Use an 8mm socket to remove any small screws holding the splash shield.
  • Lower the splash shield and set it aside.
  • Keep clips in a cup.

Step 4: Locate the Starter Motor

  • From underneath the front of the engine, look at the transmission bellhousing area where the engine and transmission meet.
  • The starter motor is a small cylindrical electric motor with a thick battery cable attached to it.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to gently move wiring retainers out of the way.

Step 5: Label and Remove the Starter Wiring

  • Confirm the negative battery cable is still disconnected before touching the starter terminals.
  • Use a 13mm socket or 13mm wrench to remove the nut from the large starter battery cable terminal.
  • Pull the large cable off the starter stud and move it aside.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the small starter signal wire nut if equipped.
  • If the small signal wire uses a push connector, press the tab with your finger or a flat-blade screwdriver and unplug it gently.
  • Do not pull on wires.

Step 6: Remove the Starter Mounting Bolts

  • Support the starter with one hand because it can drop when the bolts come out.
  • Use a 15mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to loosen the starter mounting bolts.
  • Use a 3/8-inch drive universal joint if the upper bolt is hard to reach.
  • Remove both mounting bolts and keep track of their positions.
  • Lower the starter out of the engine bay carefully.

Step 7: Compare the Old and New Starter

  • Place the old and new starter motor side by side.
  • Check that the mounting ears, electrical terminals, and gear nose match.
  • Do not install the new starter if the mounting pattern or electrical posts are different.

Step 8: Install the New Starter

  • Lift the new starter into position by hand.
  • Start both mounting bolts by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use a 15mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to snug the bolts.
  • Use a torque wrench rated 10-100 Nm with the 15mm socket to tighten the starter mounting bolts to Torque to 48 Nm (35 ft-lbs).
  • Hand-start bolts first.

Step 9: Reconnect the Starter Wiring

  • Install the large battery cable onto the starter stud.
  • Use a 13mm socket or 13mm wrench to tighten the large cable nut to Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
  • Install the small signal wire.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the small signal wire nut to Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs), if equipped.
  • If the small wire uses a push connector, push it on until it clicks.
  • Make sure the wiring is routed away from the exhaust and moving parts.

Step 10: Reinstall the Splash Shield

  • Lift the lower splash shield back into place.
  • Use an 8mm socket to reinstall any screws.
  • Use your hands and a trim clip removal tool to reinstall the plastic clips.
  • Make sure the shield is secure and not hanging down.

Step 11: Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Lower your Focus slowly to the ground with the floor jack.

Step 12: Reconnect the Battery

  • Apply a light coat of battery terminal protectant to the battery terminal if available.
  • Place the negative cable back on the negative battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the terminal nut until snug.
  • Do not overtighten the terminal because it can crack.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Focus and listen for a clean, quick crank.
  • If the starter clicks but does not crank, recheck the battery charge and starter cable tightness.
  • If the engine cranks slowly, check the battery terminals again for corrosion or looseness.
  • Confirm the lower splash shield is secure after a short test drive.
  • Reset the clock and any basic radio settings if they were lost after battery disconnect.
