🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect and remove the battery
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp. Twist and lift the clamp off the battery post.
- If the clamp is stuck, use the battery terminal puller. This small puller lifts the clamp without damaging the battery post.
- Position the negative cable where it cannot spring back onto the battery.
- Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the positive terminal, then close its protective cover over the cable end.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the battery hold-down fasteners.
- Lift the battery straight upward using its handle. Batteries are heavy, so keep your back straight and use both hands.
Step 2: Remove the intake-air duct and air-cleaner assembly
- Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the mass-airflow sensor connector retaining bracket if it obstructs removal. Press connector locks by hand; do not pull on the wires.
- Use slip-joint pliers to compress and move any spring hose clamps attached to the intake duct.
- Use a 10mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the intake-hose clamp at the throttle-body end.
- Release the air-cleaner cover clips by hand and remove the intake duct and cover together as access permits.
- Remove the air filter and keep it clean.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and extension to remove the lower air-cleaner housing fasteners.
- Lift out the lower housing without forcing the attached wiring or hoses.
- Photograph each hose before disconnecting it.
Step 3: Remove the battery tray
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 6-inch extension to remove the battery-tray fasteners.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to release any harness clips attached to the tray.
- Lift the tray out and illuminate the starter area with a mechanic’s work light.
- The bellhousing is the metal housing joining the engine and transmission. The starter is bolted to this housing.
Step 4: Disconnect the starter wiring
- Confirm once more that the battery is completely removed.
- Press the small starter-solenoid connector lock by hand and pull the connector straight off. The solenoid is the small cylinder attached to the starter.
- Pull back the rubber cap covering the starter’s large electrical terminal.
- Use a 12mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to remove the terminal nut.
- Lift the main cable eyelet off the stud and position it away from the starter.
- Inspect the eyelet for looseness, heat discoloration, or green corrosion.
Step 5: Remove the old starter
- Support the starter with one hand because it can drop when the final bolt is removed.
- Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and the extension that provides the straightest access to loosen the two starter mounting bolts.
- Remove both bolts, keeping track of their original positions if their lengths differ.
- Pull the starter straight away from the bellhousing, then guide it upward through the battery-tray opening.
- Do not pry against the aluminum transmission housing.
Step 6: Compare and install the replacement starter
- Place both starters side by side. Confirm that the mounting flange, pinion gear, electrical stud, and connector are identical.
- Use a clean cloth and the flat edge of a plastic trim removal tool to clear loose dirt from the starter mounting surface. Do not let debris enter the bellhousing opening.
- Position the replacement starter squarely against the bellhousing.
- Install both mounting bolts by hand for several turns to prevent cross-threading.
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten both starter mounting bolts evenly to 37 Nm (27 ft-lbs).
- Start every bolt by hand first.
Step 7: Reconnect the starter wiring
- Place the main cable eyelet fully onto the starter terminal stud.
- Install the terminal nut and use a 12mm socket with the torque wrench to tighten it to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the nut because the insulated terminal can crack or rotate.
- Push the rubber protective cap completely over the terminal.
- Push the small solenoid connector into place until its lock clicks.
- Gently tug the connector by its housing to confirm it is locked.
Step 8: Reinstall the battery tray and intake components
- Set the battery tray into position and reinstall its wiring clips using the plastic trim removal tool.
- Start the battery-tray fasteners by hand, then tighten them securely with a 10mm socket. Do not overtighten fasteners threaded into plastic or thin sheet metal.
- Reinstall the lower air-cleaner housing using a 10mm socket.
- Reinstall the air filter in its original orientation, then fit the cover and engage every retaining clip.
- Reconnect all hoses and move the spring clamps back into their original grooves using slip-joint pliers.
- Fit the intake hose completely over the throttle-body neck and tighten its clamp with a 10mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver until snug.
- Reconnect the mass-airflow sensor connector by hand until it clicks.
Step 9: Reinstall and connect the battery
- Lower the battery into the tray with the terminals in their original positions.
- Install the battery hold-down and use a 10mm socket to tighten it to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Connect the positive terminal first. Use a 10mm socket to tighten its clamp to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Connect the negative terminal last. Use a 10mm socket to tighten its clamp to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Apply a light coating of battery-terminal protectant after both clamps are secure.
- Confirm that neither terminal can rotate by hand.
✅ After Repair
- 🔍 Check that no tools remain in the engine compartment and that every intake connector and hose is attached.
- 🔑 Start the engine. The starter should crank evenly without grinding, clicking, or continuing to run after the engine starts.
- ⏱️ Switch the engine off, wait 30 seconds, and perform two more starts.
- 🚨 If the starter grinds or remains engaged, switch the engine off immediately and recheck starter fitment and wiring.
- 🪟 Restore automatic-window operation by fully lowering each affected window, then fully raising it and holding the switch for approximately one second.
- 🕒 Reset the clock and saved audio settings if needed.
- 🚙 The idle may fluctuate briefly while the engine computer relearns after battery disconnection. Let the engine idle with accessories off until it stabilizes.
