🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood and Inspect the Belt Path

• Use a flashlight to look down at the front side of the engine where the belt runs around the pulleys.
• Use your phone to take a photo of the belt routing before touching anything.
• Look for cracks, missing ribs, shiny glazing, fraying, or belt dust around the pulleys.
• Photo first, tools second.

Step 2: Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable

• Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
• Lift the cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
• This helps prevent accidental electrical contact near the alternator.

Step 3: Create More Access if Needed

• Use a floor jack to raise the front passenger side only if you need lower access.
• Place a jack stand under the approved front support point before working near the wheel well.
• Use a trim clip removal tool to remove any plastic splash shield clips that block your view of the belt.
• Set the clips aside in a cup or tray so they do not get lost.

Step 4: Locate the Belt Tensioner

• Use a flashlight to find the spring-loaded tensioner pulley on the belt path.
• The tensioner pulley is a smooth pulley mounted on a moving arm.
• Look for the hex area on the tensioner arm where your tool fits.

Step 5: Release Belt Tension

• Use a 14mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive breaker bar or serpentine belt tool on the tensioner hex.
• Rotate the tensioner slowly to relieve tension from the belt.
• Hold the tensioner in the released position while sliding the belt off the easiest upper pulley.
• Slowly let the tensioner return to its resting position. Do not let it snap back.
• Move slowly; the spring is strong.

Step 6: Remove the Old Belt

• Use your hands to pull the old belt out from around the remaining pulleys.
• If the belt is stuck between pulleys, use a flashlight to guide it out carefully.
• Do not use a screwdriver to pry against pulley grooves.

Step 7: Compare the Old and New Belt

• Lay the old and new serpentine belts side by side on a clean surface.
• Use your hands to compare length, width, and rib count.
• The ribbed side of the belt must match the ribbed pulleys. The smooth side rides on smooth pulleys.

Step 8: Route the New Belt

• Use your belt routing photo as your guide.
• Route the new belt around the lower pulleys first, then the upper pulleys.
• Leave the easiest smooth pulley for last.
• Make sure every ribbed section of belt sits fully inside the pulley grooves.
• One rib off can shred the belt.

Step 9: Re-Tension the Belt

• Use the 14mm socket with the 3/8-inch drive breaker bar or serpentine belt tool to rotate the tensioner again.
• Slide the belt over the final pulley while holding the tensioner released.
• Slowly release the tensioner until it applies pressure to the belt.
• There is no manual belt tension adjustment on your RAV4. The spring tensioner sets belt tension automatically.

Step 10: Verify Belt Alignment

• Use a flashlight to inspect every pulley from the top and, if accessible, from the wheel well.
• Check that the belt is centered on each pulley.
• Check that the belt ribs are not hanging over the edge of any ribbed pulley.
• Use your hands only with the battery disconnected and engine off.

Step 11: Reinstall Shields and Lower the Vehicle

• Use the trim clip removal tool by hand to reinstall any splash shield clips removed earlier.
• Use the floor jack to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stand.
• Remove the jack stand and lower the vehicle slowly with the floor jack.

Step 12: Reconnect the Battery

• Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
• Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the terminal clamp until snug.
• Do not overtighten the clamp. It only needs to be secure and unable to twist by hand.

• Confirm the belt runs smoothly with no wobble, chirp, slap, or walking off a pulley.
