Replacing the serpentine belt on your Ranger means removing the old accessory drive belt and installing a new one around the crankshaft, alternator, A/C compressor, water pump, and belt tensioner pulleys. A worn belt can squeal, crack, slip, or leave you stranded if it breaks.

  • ⚠️ The belt tensioner is spring-loaded. A tensioner stores spring force to keep the belt tight, so move it slowly and keep a firm grip on the tool.
  • ⚠️ Do not start the engine until you confirm the belt is seated in every pulley groove.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Ranger on level ground.
  • Shift to Park and apply the parking brake.
  • Turn the engine off and let it cool fully.
  • Open the hood and support it securely.
  • Take a clear photo of the belt routing before removal. This gives you a backup if the under-hood belt diagram is hard to read.
  • Check the replacement belt against the old belt before installing. The length and rib count must match.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the Belt Routing Diagram

  • Use a work light to look under the hood near the radiator support or underside of the hood for the belt routing diagram.
  • If the diagram is missing, use your phone photo as a guide before removing the belt.
  • The grooved side of the belt rides on grooved pulleys. The smooth side rides on smooth pulleys.
  • Take the photo now.

Step 2: Find the Belt Tensioner

  • Use a work light to locate the automatic belt tensioner on the front of the engine.
  • The tensioner is the spring-loaded pulley arm that keeps the belt tight.
  • Look for either a square 3/8-inch drive opening or a bolt head on the tensioner arm.

Step 3: Release Belt Tension

  • Put on safety glasses and mechanic gloves.
  • Insert the 3/8-inch drive serpentine belt tool or 3/8-inch drive ratchet into the tensioner drive opening.
  • If your tensioner uses a bolt head instead, place a 15mm socket on the tensioner bolt head.
  • Rotate the tensioner slowly to relieve belt tension.
  • Hold the tensioner in the released position while keeping your fingers away from the pulleys.
  • No torque spec applies here because no fasteners are removed.

Step 4: Remove the Old Belt

  • While holding the tensioner released with the 3/8-inch drive serpentine belt tool, slide the belt off one smooth pulley first.
  • Slowly let the tensioner return to its resting position. Do not let it snap back.
  • Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys by hand.
  • Use a flathead screwdriver only if needed to gently guide the belt out of a tight spot. Do not pry hard against plastic pulleys or covers.
  • Smooth pulley first is easiest.

Step 5: Inspect the Pulleys and Tensioner

  • Use your hand to spin the accessible idler pulleys and tensioner pulley.
  • An idler pulley is a free-spinning guide pulley that helps route the belt.
  • The pulleys should spin smoothly without grinding, wobbling, or rough spots.
  • Use a work light to check pulley grooves for dirt, rubber buildup, or damage.
  • If a pulley is noisy, loose, or wobbling, replace it before installing the new belt.

Step 6: Route the New Belt

  • Route the new serpentine belt around the pulleys using the belt diagram or your photo.
  • Leave the easiest smooth pulley for last. This makes the final slip-on step easier.
  • Make sure the ribbed side of the belt sits fully inside the grooved pulleys.
  • Use a work light to check the lower pulleys carefully because they are harder to see.
  • Grooves must line up perfectly.

Step 7: Reapply Tension and Slip Belt On

  • Use the 3/8-inch drive serpentine belt tool, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, or 15mm socket to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Slip the belt over the final smooth pulley by hand.
  • Slowly release the tensioner until it applies tension to the belt.
  • Do not force the belt. If it will not fit, stop and recheck routing.
  • No torque spec applies because the tensioner is not removed.

Step 8: Check Belt Seating

  • Use a work light to inspect every pulley.
  • Confirm the belt ribs are centered in all grooved pulleys.
  • Confirm the belt is not hanging off the edge of any pulley.
  • Use a flathead screwdriver only to point at areas during inspection. Do not pry on the installed belt.
  • Remove all tools from the engine bay before starting the engine.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Ranger and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
  • Watch the belt from a safe distance. It should run smoothly without wobbling or walking off a pulley.
  • Listen for squealing, chirping, slapping, or grinding noises.
  • Turn the engine off and recheck belt alignment with a work light.
  • If the belt shifted, shut the engine off immediately and recheck routing and pulley condition.
  • No scan tool reset, battery registration, or infotainment procedure is required for this repair.
