🔧 Focus - Serpentine Belt Replacement

Replacing the serpentine belt on your Focus involves removing belt tension, slipping the old belt off the pulleys, and installing the new belt in the correct routing. The serpentine belt drives important accessories, so a cracked, noisy, or slipping belt should be replaced before it fails.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work only with the engine completely cool so you do not burn your hands near the belt and pulleys.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers, tools, hair, and clothing away from the belt path.
  • ⚠️ Do not start the engine while the belt is removed.
  • ⚠️ Disconnecting the battery is recommended because your hands will be near rotating engine components.
  • ⚠️ Support the hood securely before working in the engine bay.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 8mm socket
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • 15mm socket
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Work light
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Focus on level ground, shift into neutral, and apply the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool fully.
  • Use your phone to take a clear photo of the belt routing before removal.
  • A serpentine belt tool is a long, thin handle used to move the spring-loaded belt tensioner in tight spaces.
  • The belt tensioner is the spring-loaded pulley arm that keeps the belt tight.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket and move the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery post.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover and Gain Access

  • Use both hands to lift the engine cover straight upward if equipped; it is held by rubber grommets.
  • Use a work light to look down the passenger side of the engine where the belt and pulleys are located.
  • If the air intake tube blocks your hand access, loosen the clamp with a flat-blade screwdriver or 8mm socket, then move the tube gently aside.
  • Take a photo before touching the belt.

Step 2: Locate the Belt Tensioner

  • Use the work light to find the smooth pulley attached to the spring-loaded tensioner arm.
  • The tensioner has a center bolt area that can be rotated with a 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet, or with a 3/8-inch drive serpentine belt tool.
  • Before moving the tensioner, compare the belt path to your photo so you understand how the new belt will sit on each pulley.

Step 3: Release Belt Tension

  • Place the 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive serpentine belt tool onto the tensioner bolt.
  • Rotate the tensioner slowly to relieve belt tension.
  • While holding the tensioner released, slide the belt off the easiest smooth pulley first.
  • Slowly let the tensioner return to its resting position; do not let it snap back.
  • Move slowly; the tensioner spring is strong.

Step 4: Remove the Old Belt

  • Use your hands with mechanic gloves to pull the old belt off the remaining pulleys.
  • Guide the belt out from the top of the engine bay.
  • Check the old belt for cracks, missing ribs, shiny glazing, or frayed edges.
  • If a pulley wobbles, grinds, or feels rough when spun by hand, do not install the new belt until that pulley issue is repaired.

Step 5: Route the New Belt

  • Use your belt-routing photo and route the new serpentine drive belt around the crankshaft pulley first.
  • Fit the ribbed side of the belt into ribbed pulleys and the smooth side of the belt against smooth pulleys.
  • Leave the easiest upper smooth pulley for last so the belt can slip on when tension is released.
  • Use the work light to make sure the belt ribs sit fully inside every pulley groove.
  • One rib off can destroy the belt.

Step 6: Install the Belt Over the Final Pulley

  • Place the 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive serpentine belt tool back on the tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner slowly to create slack.
  • Slide the belt over the final pulley by hand while keeping your fingers away from pinch points.
  • Slowly release the tensioner until it tightens the belt.
  • Use the work light to inspect every pulley again.

Step 7: Reinstall Anything Removed

  • If the air intake tube was moved, reinstall it and tighten the clamp with a flat-blade screwdriver or 8mm socket until snug.
  • Reinstall the engine cover by pressing it straight down onto its rubber mounts.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) for the battery terminal clamp.

Step 8: First Start Check

  • Remove all tools from the engine bay.
  • Start the engine and watch the belt from a safe distance using the work light.
  • The belt should run smoothly with no wobble, squeal, or edge walking.
  • Shut the engine off immediately if the belt is not centered on every pulley.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Let the engine idle for 1-2 minutes and listen for squealing or chirping.
  • ✅ Turn the A/C on and off to confirm the belt remains quiet under load.
  • ✅ Shut the engine off and recheck belt alignment with the work light.
  • ✅ After the first short drive, inspect the belt again to make sure it has not shifted.
  • ✅ If the battery was disconnected, reset the clock and one-touch window function if needed.
