š§ XT5 - Serpentine Belt Replacement
Your XT5ās serpentine belt drives accessories like the alternator and A/C compressor. Replacing it is mostly about safely relieving tension with the belt tensioner, swapping the belt, and confirming itās seated correctly on every pulley.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Work on a cool engine; belts and pulleys can burn you.
- ā ļø Keep fingers, hair, and clothing away from pulleys.
- ā ļø If you raise the vehicle, support it with jack standsānever rely on the jack.
- ā ļø Do not start the engine with tools in the belt area.
- ā ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this job, but keep the key far away so nobody can start it.

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
- Open the hood and find the belt routing diagram (usually a sticker in the engine bay). If itās missing, take a clear photo/sketch of the current routing before removing the belt.
- Plan your access path: on the XT5, belt access is commonly easiest from the passenger-side wheel well (remove wheel + splash shield), but some people can do it from above with a long belt tool.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Create access to the belt area
- Option A (wheel-well access, most room): Use a 22mm lug nut socket with a 1/2" breaker bar to loosen the passenger-front lug nuts 1/2 turn while the tire is on the ground.
- Lift the passenger-front corner with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and set it on jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Remove the wheel using the 22mm lug nut socket.
- Remove the passenger-side lower splash shield/liner fasteners using a 7mm socket, 10mm socket, and trim clip remover (a trim clip remover is a small pry tool that pops plastic clips out without breaking them).
- Option B (top access): Use a flashlight to locate the belt tensioner and the belt path from above; youāll likely need the long serpentine belt tool with 15mm socket (specialty) for leverage.
Step 2: Relieve belt tension (move the tensioner)
- Place the serpentine belt tool with 15mm socket (specialty) on the belt tensionerās hex boss.
- Slowly rotate the tensioner in the direction that moves the tensioner arm away from the belt (youāll feel strong spring resistance). Go slowāspring force is strong.
- While holding the tensioner rotated, slide the belt off one smooth pulley (an idler pulley is a smooth guide pulley) using your gloved hand.
- Carefully let the tensioner return to its resting positionādo not let it āsnapā back.
Step 3: Remove the old belt
- Pull the belt out from the remaining pulleys by hand.
- Use a flashlight to inspect pulleys for cracks, wobble, or roughness (spin each pulley by hand if accessible).
Step 4: Route the new belt
- Compare the new belt to the old one (length and rib count should match).
- Route the new belt following the under-hood belt diagram.
- Make sure the belt ribs are fully seated in the grooves of every ribbed pulley (a ribbed pulley has grooves; the belt ātracksā in them).
- Leave the easiest-to-reach smooth pulley for last so you can slip it on after releasing tension.
Step 5: Re-apply tension and seat the belt
- Use the serpentine belt tool with 15mm socket (specialty) to rotate the tensioner again.
- Slip the belt onto the last pulley by hand.
- Slowly release the tensioner so it tightens the belt.
- Use a flashlight to double-check the belt is centered on every pulley and not riding on an edge.
Step 6: Reinstall splash shield and wheel (if removed)
- Reinstall the splash shield/liner using the 7mm socket, 10mm socket, and trim clip remover.
- Reinstall the wheel using the 22mm lug nut socket.
- Lower the vehicle, then tighten lug nuts in a star pattern with a torque wrench: Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).
ā After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds while you watch the belt (from a safe distance) to confirm it runs smoothly.
- Turn A/C on and off and listen for squeal, chirping, or slapping noises.
- Shut the engine off and do a final visual check that the belt is still seated correctly.
