📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your F-150 on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully before reaching near the belt and pulleys.
  • Open the hood and use the hood prop or hood struts to secure it.
  • Use a work light to locate the belt path at the front of the engine.
  • Take a clear photo of the old belt routing before removal. This prevents routing mistakes.

  • The belt tensioner is a spring-loaded pulley arm that keeps the belt tight automatically.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the Belt Routing

  • Use a work light to view the belt path around the front pulleys.
  • Look for a belt routing label under the hood or near the radiator support.
  • If the label is missing or hard to read, use your phone to take a photo of the current belt path.
  • Make sure the new belt has the same rib count and similar length before removing the old belt.

Step 2: Locate the Automatic Belt Tensioner

  • Use the work light to find the smooth tensioner pulley and spring-loaded arm on the front of the engine.
  • The tensioner has a square drive opening or bolt head used to rotate it and release belt tension.
  • Use the 3/8-inch drive serpentine belt tool or 3/8-inch drive ratchet as needed to fit the tensioner.

Step 3: Release Belt Tension

  • Install the 3/8-inch drive serpentine belt tool into the tensioner drive opening, or use the 15mm socket with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet if your tensioner uses a bolt head.
  • Slowly rotate the tensioner to unload the belt.
  • Hold the tensioner steady while slipping the belt off the easiest-access smooth pulley.
  • Keep your fingers away from the pinch point between the belt and pulley.
  • Slowly let the tensioner move back to its resting position after the belt is free.

Step 4: Remove the Old Belt

  • Use your hands to pull the old belt off the remaining pulleys.
  • Use a flat-head screwdriver only if needed to gently guide the belt out of a tight area.
  • Do not pry against plastic pulleys, wiring, hoses, or sensors.
  • Compare the old belt with the new belt. The new belt should match in width and rib count.

Step 5: Inspect the Pulleys

  • Use your hand to spin each accessible smooth idler pulley and the tensioner pulley.
  • They should spin smoothly without grinding, wobbling, or squeaking.
  • Check grooved pulleys for packed-in rubber, oil, or debris.
  • If any pulley is noisy, loose, or rough, replace it before installing the new belt.
  • Check for oil or coolant leaks near the belt. Fluid on a belt can cause slipping and early failure.

Step 6: Route the New Belt

  • Use your belt routing photo or under-hood diagram to place the new belt around the pulleys.
  • Start with the lower pulleys first, then work upward.
  • Make sure the ribbed side of the belt sits in grooved pulleys.
  • Make sure the smooth back side of the belt sits against smooth pulleys.
  • Leave the easiest-access smooth pulley for last.
  • Check every groove before tensioning.

Step 7: Reapply Tension

  • Use the 3/8-inch drive serpentine belt tool or 15mm socket with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Slip the new belt over the final pulley while holding the tensioner back.
  • Slowly release the tensioner until it tightens the belt.
  • Do not let the tensioner snap back.
  • No torque spec is required because the belt tensioner is spring-loaded and no mounting bolts are removed.

Step 8: Verify Belt Alignment

  • Use the work light to inspect every pulley.
  • Make sure the belt is centered and all ribs are seated fully in the pulley grooves.
  • If the belt is one groove off, use the 3/8-inch drive serpentine belt tool to release tension and correct it before starting the engine.
  • Check that no tools are left in the engine bay.

Step 9: Start and Observe

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Use the work light to watch the belt from a safe distance.
  • The belt should run straight with no jumping, chirping, squealing, or wobbling.
  • Shut the engine off immediately if the belt walks off a pulley or makes loud noise.

✅ After Repair

  • Let the engine run for 1-2 minutes, then shut it off and recheck belt alignment.
  • Turn on the A/C and headlights, then listen for belt squeal under load.
  • After a short drive, open the hood and inspect the belt again with the engine off.
  • If squealing continues, inspect the tensioner, idler pulleys, and accessory pulleys for wear or misalignment.
