  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully before touching the belt area.
  • Open the hood and locate the belt routing diagram. If no diagram is present, take a clear photo of the current routing before removing the old belt.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Find the belt tensioner

  • Open the hood and locate the serpentine belt on the front of the engine.
  • Find the belt tensioner. It is the spring-loaded pulley arm that keeps the belt tight.
  • Look for the smooth pulley on a moving arm.

Step 2: Release belt tension

  • Use a 15mm wrench or 15mm socket with 1/2-inch drive ratchet on the tensioner hex.
  • Rotate the tensioner in the direction that relieves belt tension.
  • Hold it steady while you slide the belt off one easy-to-reach pulley, usually the alternator or idler pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner after the belt is free.

Step 3: Remove the old belt

  • Slip the belt off the remaining pulleys and remove it from the engine bay.
  • Inspect the pulleys for wobble, roughness, or damage while the belt is off.
  • Spin each pulley by hand.

Step 4: Route the new belt

  • Compare the new belt to the old one to confirm the length matches.
  • Route the new belt around all pulleys except the easiest-to-reach pulley you will leave for last.
  • Make sure the belt ribs sit fully in the grooved pulleys and the smooth side runs on smooth pulleys.
  • Follow the factory belt routing path exactly.

Step 5: Install the belt on the final pulley

  • Use the 15mm wrench or 15mm socket with 1/2-inch drive ratchet to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Slide the belt onto the last pulley while holding the tensioner back.
  • Slowly release the tensioner and make sure the belt seats correctly on every pulley.

Step 6: Verify alignment

  • Check every pulley groove to confirm the belt is centered and fully seated.
  • Look along the belt path to make sure there is no twist or misalignment.
  • One rib out can shred the belt fast.

  • Listen for squealing, chirping, or slapping noises.
  • Turn on the A/C and headlights to confirm smooth operation under load.
  • Shut the engine off and recheck belt seating after the test.
