📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool completely.
  • If needed, raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands.
  • Open the hood and locate the belt routing diagram, if equipped, on the radiator support or underhood label.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the belt and tensioner

  • Use a flashlight to find the serpentine belt path at the front of the engine.
  • Identify the automatic belt tensioner. The tensioner is the spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight.
  • Take a quick photo first.

Step 2: Release belt tension

  • Use a 15mm socket on a 3/8-inch drive ratchet or breaker bar on the tensioner arm.
  • Rotate the tensioner in the direction that loosens the belt.
  • Hold the tensioner steady while slipping the belt off one easy-to-reach pulley.
  • No fastener torque applies here because you are not removing a bolt.

Step 3: Remove the old belt

  • Slowly release the tensioner and remove the belt from the rest of the pulleys.
  • Compare the old belt to the new one for length and rib count before installing.
  • Inspect each pulley by hand for wobble, roughness, or damage.

Step 4: Route the new belt

  • Use the underhood belt routing diagram, or follow the same path as the old belt.
  • Start the belt on the easiest lower pulleys first, then work upward.
  • Keep the belt ribs fully seated in every grooved pulley.
  • Double-check every groove.

Step 5: Install the belt over the last pulley

  • Use the 15mm socket and ratchet to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Slip the belt onto the final pulley while the tensioner is held back.
  • Slowly release the tensioner so it tightens the belt.

Step 6: Verify belt seating

  • Use a flashlight to inspect every pulley groove.
  • Make sure the belt is centered and not riding on the edge of any pulley.
  • Rotate the engine by hand only if you know how and have the proper access; otherwise continue to the start-up check.

Step 7: Start and inspect

  • Start the engine and watch the belt for 30 to 60 seconds.
  • Listen for squealing, chirping, or slapping noises.
  • If the belt walks off-center, shut the engine off immediately and recheck routing and pulley condition.

  • Confirm the steering, charging system, and air conditioning operate normally.
  • Recheck belt tracking after a short test drive.
  • If you hear noise, inspect the tensioner and idler pulleys for wear.
