  • 🔍 Inspect the replacement belt before installation. It must match the old belt’s width, rib count, and approximate length.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the Belt and Tensioner

  • Use the LED work light to locate the serpentine belt on the passenger side of the engine.
  • Use the telescoping inspection mirror to identify the belt’s path around the crankshaft pulley, air-conditioning compressor, alternator, and automatic tensioner.
  • Compare the routing with the factory diagram under the hood before continuing.
  • Photograph the routing before removing anything.

Step 2: Inspect the Existing Routing

  • Use the LED work light to confirm that the ribbed side of the belt contacts grooved pulleys and the smooth back of the belt contacts smooth pulleys.
  • Use the telescoping inspection mirror to check the lower crankshaft and air-conditioning compressor pulleys.
  • Plan to leave the easiest upper pulley, normally the alternator, until last during installation.

Step 3: Release Belt Tension

  • Fit the 19mm six-point socket and 1/2-inch-drive long-handle breaker bar onto the tensioner pulley’s center bolt.
  • Slowly rotate the tensioner clockwise to remove tension from the belt. The spring resistance will be strong but smooth.
  • Hold the breaker bar firmly and slide the belt off the accessible upper pulley with your gloved free hand.
  • Slowly return the tensioner to its resting position. Do not let it snap back.
  • No fastener is removed during this step, so there is no torque specification.

Step 4: Remove the Old Belt

  • Use your gloved hands to work the loose belt off each pulley and lift it out of the engine compartment.
  • Use the LED work light and telescoping inspection mirror to ensure no torn belt material remains around the lower pulleys.
  • Keep the old belt nearby so its length and rib count can be compared with the replacement.

Step 5: Inspect the Pulleys and Tensioner

  • Use your gloved hand to rotate each accessible pulley except the crankshaft pulley.
  • Check for roughness, grinding, looseness, or sideways wobble. A noisy or loose pulley must be repaired before installing the new belt.
  • Use the 19mm six-point socket and 1/2-inch-drive long-handle breaker bar to move the tensioner slowly through its travel.
  • Replace the tensioner separately if it binds, feels weak, or does not return smoothly.

Step 6: Route the New Belt

  • Use the under-hood factory diagram and route the replacement belt around the crankshaft pulley, air-conditioning compressor, tensioner, and alternator in the illustrated order.
  • Use the LED work light and telescoping inspection mirror to verify the belt is centered on every lower pulley.
  • Leave the belt off the easiest upper pulley until the final step.
  • Ensure every belt rib sits inside a matching pulley groove. The smooth side must run only against smooth pulley surfaces.
  • A one-rib misalignment can destroy the new belt.

Step 7: Install the Belt Over the Final Pulley

  • Place the 19mm six-point socket and 1/2-inch-drive long-handle breaker bar on the tensioner pulley center bolt.
  • Rotate the tensioner clockwise and hold it steadily against spring pressure.
  • Use your gloved free hand to slide the belt fully over the final upper pulley.
  • Slowly release the breaker bar so the tensioner applies pressure to the belt.
  • Do not tighten or loosen the tensioner pulley bolt. It was used only as a leverage point, so no torque specification applies.

Step 8: Verify Belt Alignment

  • Use the LED work light to inspect every visible pulley.
  • Use the telescoping inspection mirror to inspect the lower crankshaft and air-conditioning compressor pulleys.
  • Confirm the belt is centered, every rib is correctly seated, and no section is twisted or hanging over a pulley edge.
  • Remove the 19mm six-point socket, 1/2-inch-drive long-handle breaker bar, light, and mirror from the engine compartment.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Stand clear of the belt, start the engine, and observe it from a safe distance for approximately 30 seconds.
  • ✅ The belt should track smoothly without wandering, squealing, slapping, or visible vibration.
  • ✅ Switch off the engine immediately if the belt moves toward a pulley edge or makes abnormal noise.
  • ✅ After switching off the engine, allow all pulleys to stop and perform one final alignment check with the LED work light.
  • ✅ No belt adjustment, scan-tool procedure, battery registration, or infotainment reset is required.
