Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the Belt
- Use the hood release inside the cabin, then open and support the hood.
- Use a flashlight to look at the front of the engine.
- Find the wide ribbed serpentine belt wrapped around the pulleys.
- Look for the belt routing decal under the hood or near the radiator support.
- Take a photo first.
Step 2: Remove Front Access Covers if Needed
- If the upper plastic engine cover blocks access, pull it upward by hand from its rubber mounting grommets.
- If an intake duct or small splash shield blocks hand access, use a 10mm socket or trim clip removal tool to remove the fasteners.
- Set all clips and bolts aside in order so they go back in the same spots.
Step 3: Inspect the Belt Routing
- Use the flashlight to trace the belt around every pulley.
- Confirm which side of the belt touches each pulley:
- Ribbed side goes on grooved pulleys.
- Smooth back side goes on smooth pulleys.
- Compare what you see to the belt routing decal or your photo.
Step 4: Release Belt Tension
- Place the 3/8-inch drive breaker bar or serpentine belt tool into the square drive hole on the automatic belt tensioner.
- Rotate the tensioner slowly to unload the belt tension.
- While holding the tensioner released, slide the belt off the easiest smooth pulley first.
- Slowly let the tensioner return to its resting position.
- Do not let it snap back.
Step 5: Remove the Old Belt
- Use your hands to pull the old belt off the remaining pulleys.
- Work it out from the front of the engine carefully.
- Compare the old belt to the new serpentine belt for length and rib count before installation.
- If the old belt has missing ribs, glazing, cracks, or shredded edges, inspect the pulleys closely before installing the new belt.
Step 6: Inspect the Pulleys and Tensioner
- Use your hand to spin each accessible idler pulley and tensioner pulley.
- They should spin smoothly without grinding, wobbling, or scraping noise.
- Use the flashlight to check that all pulley grooves are clean.
- If a pulley wobbles or feels rough, replace it before installing the new belt.
Step 7: Route the New Belt
- Use your photo or the under-hood routing decal as the guide.
- Route the new serpentine belt around the lower and harder-to-reach pulleys first.
- Leave one easy-to-reach smooth pulley for last.
- Make sure the ribbed side of the belt is seated fully in every grooved pulley.
- One rib off can shred the belt.
Step 8: Reapply Tension
- Use the 3/8-inch drive breaker bar or serpentine belt tool to rotate the tensioner again.
- Slide the belt over the final pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner until it applies tension to the new belt.
- Remove the breaker bar or serpentine belt tool from the tensioner.
Step 9: Verify Belt Alignment
- Use the flashlight to inspect every pulley from the front and side.
- Confirm the belt is centered on each pulley.
- Confirm all ribs are sitting inside the pulley grooves.
- If the belt is off by even one groove, use the 3/8-inch drive breaker bar to release tension and reseat it.
Step 10: Reinstall Removed Covers
- Reinstall any intake duct, splash shield, or access cover removed earlier.
- Use the 10mm socket or trim clip removal tool as needed.
- If any small 10mm bolts were removed, snug them gently. Torque to 5-7 Nm (44-62 in-lbs) unless a specific bracket torque label is present.
- Press the engine cover back down by hand until it seats on its rubber grommets.
Step 11: Start and Check Operation
- Remove all tools from the engine bay.
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- Use the flashlight from a safe distance to watch the belt track smoothly.
- Listen for squealing, chirping, slapping, or grinding.
- Shut the engine off immediately if the belt walks sideways or makes abnormal noise.

- Let the engine idle for 1-2 minutes and confirm the battery light stays off.
- Turn the A/C on and confirm the belt remains quiet.
- After a short drive, shut the engine off and recheck belt alignment with a flashlight.
