📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Pop the hood and locate the belt routing diagram (often on a sticker). If it’s missing, take a clear photo of the belt path before removal.
- Gather all tools so you’re not reaching around a supported vehicle later.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the right-front wheel lug nuts
- Use a 21mm socket with a 3/8" breaker bar to crack the lug nuts loose (about 1/2 turn).
- Loosen on the ground for stability.
Step 2: Lift and support the right-front corner
- Use a floor jack to lift the right-front jacking point.
- Place jack stands under a solid support point and lower the car onto the stands.
- Give the car a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable.
Step 3: Remove the right-front wheel
- Remove the lug nuts using a 21mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
- Remove the wheel and set it under the car as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Remove the lower splash shield / side access panel
- Use a trim clip remover (panel popper) to remove plastic clips.
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet to remove any small bolts/screws.
- Use a flashlight to locate the belt, tensioner, and pulleys.
- Keep clips/bolts in a cup.
Step 5: Release belt tension
- Locate the belt tensioner (spring-loaded arm with a pulley). A spring tensioner is designed to keep the belt tight automatically.
- Place a 14mm socket on the tensioner’s hex boss and use a 3/8" breaker bar (or a serpentine belt tool with 14mm socket (specialty)) to rotate the tensioner in the direction that moves the tensioner pulley away from the belt.
- While holding tension off, slide the belt off the easiest smooth pulley you can reach.
- Slowly let the tensioner return—do not let it snap back.
Step 6: Remove the old belt and check pulleys
- Pull the belt out and compare it to the new belt (same length and rib count).
- Spin the idler and tensioner pulleys by hand. They should spin smoothly and quietly with no wobble.
- If you see heavy cracking, chunking, or oil-soak on the old belt, clean any contamination source before installing the new belt.
Step 7: Route the new belt
- Route the new belt around the pulleys using the under-hood routing diagram.
- Make sure the ribbed side of the belt sits fully in the grooves of ribbed pulleys.
- Make sure the smooth side rides on smooth pulleys.
- Leave the easiest pulley for last.
Step 8: Apply tension and seat the belt
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8" breaker bar to rotate the tensioner away again.
- Slip the belt onto the final pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Use a flashlight to verify the belt is centered on every pulley and fully seated in the grooves.
Step 9: Reinstall splash shield and wheel
- Reinstall the splash shield using the trim clip remover (panel popper) (to align clips) and the 10mm socket for bolts/screws.
- Reinstall the wheel and hand-thread the lug nuts.
- Snug the lug nuts using a 21mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet in a star pattern.
Step 10: Lower the car and torque the lug nuts
- Use the floor jack to lift slightly, remove the jack stands, then lower the car.
- Use a torque wrench with a 21mm socket to tighten lug nuts in a star pattern: Torque to 88-108 Nm (65-80 ft-lbs).

- Start the engine and let it idle while you watch the belt for 30-60 seconds (from a safe distance).
- Listen for squealing or slapping noises; shut off immediately if the belt walks off a pulley.
- Turn A/C on and headlights on to load the belt system and confirm everything runs smoothly.
- Recheck belt seating once more after a short 5-10 minute drive.
