🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the Belt

  • Use the hood release inside the cabin, then open the hood and secure it.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the serpentine belt on the passenger side of the engine.
  • Find the belt routing diagram under the hood. If the label is missing, use your photo as your guide.
  • Take a photo before removing anything.

Step 2: Remove Any Upper Access Cover if Needed

  • If an upper plastic cover blocks your hand access, use a 10mm socket to remove its fasteners.
  • Use a flathead screwdriver gently if any plastic clips need to be lifted.
  • Set the cover and fasteners aside in a safe place.

Step 3: Identify the Belt Tensioner

  • Use a flashlight to find the spring-loaded tensioner pulley.
  • The tensioner has a bolt head in the center of the pulley area used to rotate the arm and loosen the belt.
  • On your Pilot, use a 14mm box-end wrench or serpentine belt tool with 14mm socket on the tensioner bolt.

Step 4: Release Belt Tension

  • Place the serpentine belt tool with 14mm socket onto the tensioner bolt.
  • Slowly rotate the tensioner to relieve belt tension.
  • Keep one hand firmly on the tool while using your other hand to slide the belt off the easiest smooth pulley.
  • Do not let the tensioner snap back. Slowly return it to its resting position.
  • Move slowly. The spring is strong.

Step 5: Remove the Old Belt

  • Use your hands to pull the old serpentine belt out from around all pulleys.
  • Use a flashlight to check the old belt for cracking, glazing, missing ribs, or frayed edges.
  • If pieces are missing, use a flashlight to inspect around each pulley for trapped belt material.

Step 6: Inspect the Pulleys

  • Use your hand to spin the accessible smooth pulleys.
  • They should spin smoothly without grinding, wobbling, or rough spots.
  • Look at the grooved pulleys and make sure no belt ribs or debris are stuck in the grooves.
  • If a pulley wobbles or grinds, do not install the new belt until that pulley issue is repaired.

Step 7: Route the New Belt

  • Use your photo or the under-hood routing diagram to route the new serpentine belt around the pulleys.
  • Make sure the ribbed side of the belt sits on grooved pulleys.
  • Make sure the smooth side of the belt sits on smooth pulleys.
  • Leave the easiest smooth pulley for last so the belt can slip on once the tensioner is released.
  • Ribs go into grooves.

Step 8: Move the Tensioner and Install the Belt Fully

  • Use the serpentine belt tool with 14mm socket to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Slide the belt over the final pulley by hand.
  • Slowly release the tensioner until it applies tension to the new belt.
  • Remove the serpentine belt tool carefully.

Step 9: Check Belt Alignment

  • Use a flashlight to inspect every pulley.
  • Confirm the belt ribs are fully seated in every grooved pulley.
  • Confirm the belt is centered on every smooth pulley.
  • If the belt is off by even one rib, use the 14mm serpentine belt tool to release tension and correct it before starting the engine.

Step 10: Reinstall Any Removed Covers

  • Reinstall any removed plastic cover by hand first.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the cover fasteners snugly.
  • Do not overtighten plastic cover fasteners.

Step 11: Start and Observe

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Use a flashlight to watch the belt from a safe distance.
  • The belt should run smoothly with no wobble, squeal, slap, or walking off the pulley.
  • Turn the engine off immediately if the belt does not track straight.

  • ✅ Let the engine idle for 30-60 seconds and listen for squealing or chirping.
  • ✅ Turn the A/C on and confirm the belt still runs smoothly.
  • ✅ Shut the engine off and recheck belt seating with a flashlight.
