📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Canyon on level ground.
  • Shift to Park if automatic, or Neutral if manual, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool fully.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the belt routing diagram sticker in the engine bay. If the sticker is missing, take clear photos of the belt path before removal.
  • A serpentine belt tool is a long, thin handle used to move the spring-loaded belt tensioner in tight spaces.
  • The belt tensioner is the spring-loaded pulley arm that keeps the belt tight.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and tuck it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Black cable is negative.

Step 2: Locate the Serpentine Belt and Tensioner

  • Use a flashlight to view the front of the engine.
  • Find the belt wrapped around the crankshaft pulley, alternator, water pump, A/C compressor, and idler/tensioner pulleys.
  • Locate the tensioner pulley. It will be attached to a spring-loaded arm and usually has a square drive opening or bolt head for tool engagement.

Step 3: Record the Belt Routing

  • Use your phone or a flashlight to clearly see the full belt route.
  • Compare it to the under-hood belt routing label.
  • Make sure you know which pulleys use the ribbed side of the belt and which use the smooth back side.
  • Photo first. Remove second.

Step 4: Release Belt Tension

  • Install the 3/8-inch drive serpentine belt tool or 3/8-inch drive breaker bar into the tensioner drive opening if equipped.
  • If your tensioner uses a bolt-style head, use the 15mm socket with the 3/8-inch drive breaker bar.
  • Rotate the tensioner slowly to relieve belt tension. Do not force it past its stop.
  • While holding the tensioner released, slide the belt off the easiest smooth pulley first, usually an idler pulley.
  • Slowly let the tensioner return to its resting position.

Step 5: Remove the Old Belt

  • Use your hands with mechanic gloves to pull the belt out from around the pulleys.
  • Note how the belt snakes around the lower crankshaft pulley before fully removing it.
  • Inspect the old belt for cracks, missing ribs, shiny glazing, or oil contamination.

Step 6: Inspect the Pulleys

  • Use your hands to spin the accessible idler and tensioner pulleys.
  • They should spin smoothly without grinding, wobble, or rough spots.
  • Use a flashlight to check that pulley grooves are clean and not packed with rubber debris.
  • If a pulley is noisy or loose, replace it before installing the new belt.

Step 7: Route the New Belt

  • Use your belt routing photo or under-hood routing label.
  • Install the new serpentine belt around the lower pulleys first.
  • Make sure the ribbed side of the belt sits fully inside ribbed pulley grooves.
  • Leave the easiest smooth pulley for last, usually the upper idler pulley.
  • Ribs must sit perfectly straight.

Step 8: Reapply Tension and Seat the Belt

  • Use the 3/8-inch drive serpentine belt tool or 3/8-inch drive breaker bar with 15mm socket to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Slip the belt over the final pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner until it tightens the belt.
  • Do not let the tensioner snap back.

Step 9: Verify Belt Alignment

  • Use a flashlight to inspect every pulley.
  • Confirm the belt is centered on smooth pulleys.
  • Confirm every rib is seated in every grooved pulley.
  • If the belt is one rib off, release the tensioner again with the 3/8-inch drive serpentine belt tool and reposition it.

Step 10: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the negative battery terminal clamp snugly.
  • Do not overtighten the clamp.

Step 11: Start and Check Operation

  • Put on safety glasses.
  • Start the engine and watch the belt from a safe distance.
  • The belt should run smoothly with no wobble, squeal, slap, or walking off a pulley.
  • Shut the engine off immediately if the belt is not tracking correctly.

✅ After Repair

  • Let the engine idle for 1-2 minutes while watching the belt from a safe distance.
  • Turn on the A/C briefly and listen for squealing.
  • Shut the engine off and recheck belt alignment with a flashlight.
  • After the first short drive, inspect the belt again to confirm it remains seated correctly.
  • If you hear chirping, squealing, or grinding, inspect pulley alignment and pulley bearings before driving farther.
