📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Fit on firm, level ground. Apply the parking brake and place the transmission in Park or first gear.
- 🛞 Place wheel chocks behind both rear wheels.
- 📷 Photograph the existing belt routing from above and through the right-front wheel well.
- 🔎 Locate the underhood belt-routing label. Follow that label if it differs from your photograph.
- 📱 Infotainment settings and scan-tool commands are not required.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Right-Front Wheel
- Use the 19mm lug-nut socket and 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar to loosen each wheel nut approximately one-quarter turn.
- Leave all wheel nuts installed until your Fit is safely supported.
Step 2: Raise and Support Your Fit
- Use the 2-ton floor jack at the designated front jacking point.
- Position the 2-ton jack stand beneath the reinforced right-front side support point.
- Lower your Fit onto the stand. Gently push the body to confirm it is stable.
- Never trust a hydraulic jack by itself.
Step 3: Remove the Right-Front Wheel
- Use the 19mm lug-nut socket to remove the five wheel nuts.
- Lift off the wheel and place it flat away from your work area.
Step 4: Open the Belt Access Area
- Use the flat-blade trim-clip remover to release the clips along the front section of the right inner-fender liner.
- A trim-clip remover is a forked hand tool that lifts plastic fasteners without damaging them.
- Pull the liner aside only far enough to expose the crankshaft pulley and lower section of the belt.
- Use the LED work light to verify the belt routing before removal.
Step 5: Release the Automatic Tensioner
- Place the 19mm long-handle box-end wrench fully onto the tensioner pulley bolt.
- The automatic tensioner is the spring-loaded arm that maintains belt tension.
- Viewed from the right-front wheel opening, rotate the wrench clockwise to move the tensioner and create belt slack.
- Hold the tensioner in the released position and slide the belt off an accessible smooth pulley by hand.
- Keep your fingers away from pulley edges, then allow the tensioner to return slowly to its resting position.
- Never release the tensioner suddenly.
Step 6: Remove the Old Belt
- Wear mechanic’s gloves and guide the belt off the remaining pulleys.
- Pull the belt out through the right-front wheel opening.
- Lay the old and new belts together. Confirm that their width, rib count, and overall length are nearly identical.
- A worn belt may be slightly longer because it has stretched.
Step 7: Inspect the Belt Drive
- Use the LED work light to inspect every visible pulley groove for stones, rubber buildup, or damage.
- Turn accessible idler pulleys by hand. They should rotate smoothly without grinding, wobbling, or looseness.
- Inspect the tensioner for a crooked pulley, weak movement, or fluid leakage from its damping mechanism.
- Replace a defective pulley or tensioner before installing the new belt.
- Do not apply grease, oil, silicone spray, or belt dressing.
Step 8: Route the New Belt
- Route the new belt exactly as shown on the underhood routing label and your reference photograph.
- Place the ribbed face of the belt into grooved pulleys. Place the smooth back of the belt against smooth pulleys.
- Make sure the belt is fully seated around the lower crankshaft pulley.
- Leave one easily reached smooth pulley until last.
- Use your phone photo as a routing guide.
Step 9: Seat the Belt and Release the Tensioner
- Place the 19mm long-handle box-end wrench onto the tensioner pulley bolt again.
- Rotate the tensioner clockwise and hold it against spring pressure.
- Slide the belt over the final smooth pulley by hand.
- Inspect every grooved pulley with the LED work light. Each belt rib must sit inside a matching pulley groove.
- Slowly release the 19mm long-handle box-end wrench until the tensioner applies full pressure.
- No tensioner-bolt torque is required because that bolt is not removed.
Step 10: Perform the Final Routing Check
- Use the LED work light to follow the belt around its complete path.
- Confirm that the belt is not twisted, pinched, or hanging over any pulley edge.
- Pay particular attention to the crankshaft pulley because its lower edge is difficult to see.
Step 11: Reinstall the Inner-Fender Liner
- Move the liner back into its original position.
- Install reusable clips by hand, then press their center pins flush.
- Use the flat-blade trim-clip remover to align stubborn clip holes without tearing the liner.
- Replace any broken or loose clips.
Step 12: Reinstall the Wheel
- Place the wheel onto the hub and start all five wheel nuts by hand.
- Use the 19mm lug-nut socket to snug the nuts in a star pattern.
- Use the 2-ton floor jack to raise your Fit, remove the jack stand, and lower the tire onto the ground.
- Use the 1/2-inch-drive torque wrench and 19mm lug-nut socket to tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern: Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Check that all tools are clear of the engine compartment before starting the engine.
- 👀 Start the engine and observe the belt from a safe distance. Do not reach into the engine compartment.
- 👂 Switch the air conditioning and headlights on. Listen for chirping, squealing, slapping, or grinding.
- 🛑 Stop the engine immediately if the belt wanders toward a pulley edge or the charging-system warning appears.
- 🔎 Switch off the engine and perform one final belt-alignment check with the LED work light.
- 🛞 Recheck wheel-nut torque after approximately 80-100 km of driving.
