Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Support the Right Front
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the designated front jacking point to raise your CR-V.
- Position a jack stand rated 2-ton minimum beneath the right-front support point, then lower the vehicle securely onto it.
- Gently rock the vehicle to confirm it is stable before continuing.
Step 2: Remove the Right-Front Wheel
- Use the 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch-drive long-handle ratchet to remove the five wheel nuts.
- Remove the wheel and place it flat away from your work area.
- Slide the wheel under the sill for backup protection.
Step 3: Open the Belt Access Area
- Use the flat-blade trim-clip removal tool to lift the center pins from the right-front splash-shield clips.
- Use the Phillips No. 2 screwdriver to remove any retaining screws fitted to the splash shield.
- Move the splash shield aside to expose the crankshaft pulley and serpentine belt.
- A splash shield is the plastic panel that keeps road debris away from the engine.
Step 4: Inspect and Record the Belt Routing
- Use the LED work light to trace the belt around every pulley.
- Compare the routing with the underhood belt-routing decal.
- Notice that the grooved side of the belt runs on grooved pulleys, while the smooth back of the belt runs on smooth pulleys.
- Check the old belt for cracking, missing ribs, frayed edges, glazing, or oil contamination.
Step 5: Release the Automatic Tensioner
- Fit the 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch-drive long-handle ratchet onto the hex of the automatic belt tensioner.
- If clearance is limited, use the 1/2-inch-drive serpentine belt tool with the 19mm deep socket. A serpentine belt tool is a long, thin handle designed to reach a tight belt tensioner.
- Slowly rotate the tensioner clockwise to remove spring pressure from the belt.
- While holding the tensioner, slip the belt off the easiest accessible smooth pulley.
- Slowly return the tensioner to its resting position. Do not let it snap back.
Step 6: Remove the Old Belt
- Use your gloved hands to guide the loose belt off each pulley.
- Carefully pull the belt out through the wheel-well opening.
- Use the LED work light to inspect each pulley for damage, wobble, packed debris, or oil contamination.
- Turn accessible idler pulleys by hand. They should rotate smoothly without grinding or looseness.
Step 7: Route the New Belt
- Use your gloved hands to route the new belt according to the underhood routing decal.
- Leave the easiest accessible smooth pulley until last.
- Seat every belt rib completely inside its matching pulley groove.
- Make sure the belt is centered on each smooth pulley.
- Leave one smooth pulley for the final installation.
Step 8: Install the Belt Over the Final Pulley
- Use the 19mm deep socket with the 1/2-inch-drive long-handle ratchet or serpentine belt tool to rotate the tensioner clockwise.
- Slip the new belt over the final smooth pulley using your gloved hand.
- Keep your fingers away from the space between the belt and pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner until it applies full pressure to the new belt.
Step 9: Verify Belt Alignment
- Use the LED work light to inspect every pulley from above and through the wheel well.
- Confirm that no belt rib is hanging over a pulley edge.
- Use the 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch-drive long-handle ratchet to rotate the tensioner slightly, then release it gently and recheck alignment.
- Do not start the engine until the belt is fully seated on every pulley.
Step 10: Reinstall the Splash Shield
- Place the splash shield back into its original position.
- Use the Phillips No. 2 screwdriver to reinstall its retaining screws until snug.
- Use your gloved hands to install the splash-shield clips, then press each center pin flush.
- Replace any broken or loose clips.
Step 11: Reinstall the Wheel
- Position the right-front wheel on the hub using your gloved hands.
- Install all five wheel nuts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch-drive long-handle ratchet to tighten the nuts lightly in a crisscross pattern.
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to raise your CR-V slightly, remove the jack stand, and lower the tire onto the ground.
- Use the 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern: Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
β After Repair
- π Perform one final visual check that the belt is centered on every pulley.
- βΆοΈ Start the engine and observe the belt from a safe distance for approximately 30 seconds.
- π Switch the air conditioning on and listen for squealing, slapping, chirping, or grinding.
- π Shut the engine off immediately if the belt tracks toward a pulley edge or makes unusual noise.
- β After shutting the engine off, wait for all pulleys to stop and inspect the belt alignment again.
- π§ If the tensioner chatters, sits outside its indicator range, or has pulley play, replace the tensioner assembly before driving.
- π Recheck the wheel-nut torque after approximately 50 miles.
