📋 Before You Begin

  • 📍 Park your Impala on level ground, shift into Park, engage the parking brake, and switch off the ignition.
  • 🔑 Keep the key fob away from the vehicle so the engine cannot be started accidentally.
  • 🌡️ Wait until the engine and pulleys are cool enough to touch.
  • 🔋 Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to disconnect the negative battery cable. Position it where it cannot spring back onto the terminal.
  • 📷 Photograph the original belt routing and locate the factory routing diagram under the hood. The smooth side of the belt contacts smooth pulleys; the ribbed side contacts grooved pulleys.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Engine Appearance Cover

  • Grip the front edges of the plastic engine cover while wearing mechanic’s gloves.
  • Pull straight upward to release its rubber retainers, then lift the cover away.
  • If a retaining fastener is present, remove it first with a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet.
  • Lift evenly to avoid cracking the cover.

Step 2: Record the Factory Belt Routing

  • Use a digital camera or smartphone to photograph the belt around every pulley.
  • Use an inspection mirror with LED light to view the lower crankshaft pulley and hidden belt sections.
  • Compare the routing with the factory diagram in the engine compartment.
  • Note that the separate narrow A/C stretch belt is not removed during this main-belt procedure.

Step 3: Inspect the Pulleys Before Removal

  • Use the inspection mirror with LED light to check that the belt sits centrally in every grooved pulley.
  • Look for rubber dust, polished pulley surfaces, coolant residue, or oil contamination.
  • If the belt is oily or wet with coolant, repair the leak before installing the replacement belt.

Step 4: Release the Automatic Tensioner

  • The automatic tensioner is a spring-loaded pulley assembly that keeps the belt tight without manual adjustment.
  • Fit a 1/2-inch drive 18-inch breaker bar into the square opening on the tensioner arm. If access is limited, use a serpentine belt tool with 15mm socket on the tensioner hex.
  • Rotate the tensioner slowly in the direction that moves its pulley away from the belt. Do not force it in the opposite direction.
  • Hold the tensioner securely and slide the belt off one smooth, easy-to-reach pulley with your free hand.
  • Slowly return the tensioner to its resting position. Do not let it snap back.
  • Keep fingertips away from pulley pinch points.

Step 5: Remove the Old Belt

  • Pull the loose belt out from around the remaining pulleys while wearing mechanic’s gloves.
  • Use the inspection mirror with LED light to guide the belt around the lower pulley.
  • Do not disturb the separate narrow stretch-fit belt running between the crankshaft and A/C compressor.

Step 6: Inspect the Tensioner and Pulleys

  • Turn each accessible idler pulley by hand while wearing mechanic’s gloves.
  • Each pulley should rotate smoothly without grinding, wobbling, or looseness.
  • Move the tensioner through its travel with the 1/2-inch drive 18-inch breaker bar. It should move smoothly and return firmly.
  • Replace a noisy, loose, seized, or crooked pulley or tensioner before installing the new belt.

Step 7: Compare the New and Old Belts

  • Lay both belts side by side on a clean surface.
  • Confirm that the new belt has the same width, number of ribs, and approximate effective length as the old belt.
  • Do not install a belt with damaged ribs, sharp folds, or shipping contamination.

Step 8: Route the New Belt

  • Route the new belt according to the factory underhood diagram and your photograph.
  • Use the inspection mirror with LED light to position the belt around the lower crankshaft pulley.
  • Place the ribbed surface into every grooved pulley and the smooth surface against every smooth pulley.
  • Leave one easy-to-reach smooth pulley until last.
  • Confirm that the belt is not crossed, twisted, or riding on a pulley edge.

Step 9: Install the Belt Over the Final Pulley

  • Use the 1/2-inch drive 18-inch breaker bar or serpentine belt tool with 15mm socket to rotate the tensioner in the release direction.
  • Slide the belt over the final smooth pulley while keeping your fingers away from the gap between the belt and pulley.
  • Release the tensioner slowly until it applies full tension to the belt.
  • No tensioner bolt is loosened and no torque adjustment is required; belt tension is set automatically.

Step 10: Verify Belt Alignment

  • Use the inspection mirror with LED light to inspect every pulley.
  • Confirm that every belt rib is seated in a matching pulley groove.
  • Check the lower crankshaft pulley carefully because one displaced rib can quickly destroy the new belt.
  • If alignment is incorrect, use the 1/2-inch drive 18-inch breaker bar to release tension and reposition the belt.

Step 11: Reinstall the Cover and Battery Cable

  • Align the engine-cover retainers and press the cover straight down by hand.
  • If equipped with a retaining fastener, install it using the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet. Tighten it only until snug because the cover is plastic.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet.
  • Torque the negative battery terminal nut to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Remove every tool and loose item from the engine compartment.
  • ✅ Start the engine and observe the belt from a safe distance for 30-60 seconds.
  • ✅ The belt should run centrally without flapping, chirping, squealing, or walking toward a pulley edge.
  • ✅ Switch the engine off immediately if the belt moves sideways or makes abnormal noise, then recheck its routing and rib alignment.
  • ✅ Turn on the headlights and climate control, then verify that the charging warning and overheating warning remain off.
  • ✅ Reinspect the belt alignment after a short drive and after the engine has cooled.
