  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands if raising the front. Never work under a vehicle held only by a jack.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your CX-5 on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool completely.
  • Use a flashlight to look for the belt routing sticker under the hood. If the sticker is missing, take a clear photo of the belt path before removal.
  • The belt tensioner is a spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight automatically.
  • The idler pulley is a smooth or grooved wheel that guides the belt but does not power an accessory.
  • Use the 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal nut, then remove the negative cable and move it aside so it cannot spring back.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the Front Passenger Side

  • Use the floor jack 2-ton minimum at the front jacking point to raise the front of your CX-5 enough to access the lower splash shield area.
  • Place jack stands 2-ton minimum under the proper front support points.
  • Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
  • Give the vehicle a light shake by hand to confirm it is stable.
  • Never trust the jack alone.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Access Cover

  • Use the plastic trim clip remover to remove the push clips from the lower engine splash shield access area.
  • Use the Phillips screwdriver #2 or 8mm socket to remove the small screws if equipped.
  • Use the 10mm socket to remove any small bolts holding the shield section.
  • Set the clips and fasteners aside in order.

Step 3: Locate the Belt Tensioner

  • Use the flashlight from above and below to find the serpentine belt tensioner on the accessory belt path.
  • Find the square-drive opening or hex boss on the tensioner arm.
  • The square-drive opening is a square hole where a ratchet or belt tool fits to rotate the tensioner.

Step 4: Release Belt Tension

  • Install the serpentine belt tool 3/8-inch drive or breaker bar 3/8-inch drive into the tensioner square-drive opening.
  • If your tensioner uses a bolt head instead, use the 14mm socket on the breaker bar.
  • Rotate the tensioner slowly to relieve belt tension.
  • Hold the tensioner steady while slipping the belt off the easiest accessible smooth pulley by hand.
  • Do not let the tensioner snap back. Slowly return it to its resting position.

Step 5: Remove the Old Belt

  • Use your hands to slide the old belt off the remaining pulleys.
  • Pull the belt out through the lower access area.
  • Compare the old belt with the new serpentine belt to confirm the same length and rib count.
  • Ribs are the small lengthwise grooves on the inside of the belt that fit into grooved pulleys.

Step 6: Inspect Pulleys and Tensioner

  • Use your hand to spin each accessible idler pulley and accessory pulley.
  • Listen for grinding, squeaking, or roughness.
  • Use the flashlight to check that pulleys line up straight and are not wobbling.
  • If the tensioner arm is leaking fluid, bouncing, crooked, or weak, replace the accessory belt tensioner before installing the new belt.
  • A bad pulley ruins new belts fast.

Step 7: Route the New Belt

  • Use your belt routing photo or under-hood routing sticker.
  • Route the new serpentine belt around the lower pulleys first by hand.
  • Make sure the ribbed side of the belt sits in grooved pulleys.
  • Make sure the smooth back side of the belt runs against smooth pulleys.
  • Leave the easiest upper smooth pulley for last.

Step 8: Install the Belt Over the Last Pulley

  • Use the serpentine belt tool 3/8-inch drive or breaker bar 3/8-inch drive to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Slip the belt over the final pulley by hand.
  • Slowly release the tensioner until it tightens the belt.
  • Remove the serpentine belt tool or breaker bar.

Step 9: Verify Belt Seating

  • Use the flashlight to inspect every pulley from above and below.
  • Make sure the belt ribs sit fully inside the pulley grooves.
  • Make sure the belt is centered on every smooth pulley.
  • If any rib hangs off the edge, use the serpentine belt tool 3/8-inch drive to release tension and reposition the belt by hand.

Step 10: Reinstall the Lower Access Cover

  • Raise the lower splash shield access cover into place by hand.
  • Use the plastic trim clip remover to reinstall the push clips.
  • Use the Phillips screwdriver #2 or 8mm socket to reinstall small screws.
  • Use the 10mm socket to reinstall any small bolts.
  • Torque small splash shield bolts to 7-9 Nm (62-80 in-lbs)

Step 11: Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack 2-ton minimum to raise your CX-5 slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands by hand.
  • Slowly lower the vehicle to the ground with the floor jack.

Step 12: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery terminal by hand.
  • Use the 10mm socket to tighten the negative terminal nut.
  • Torque battery terminal nut to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs)
  • Do not overtighten the battery terminal.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your CX-5 and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
  • Watch the belt from a safe distance. It should run smoothly with no wobble, squeal, or edge walking.
  • Turn the A/C on and listen for belt noise.
  • Shut the engine off and recheck belt seating with the flashlight.
  • If the battery was disconnected, reset the clock and auto window function if needed.
  • For auto window reset, use the driver window switch to lower the window fully, then raise it fully and hold the switch up for about 2 seconds.
