๐ Before You Begin
- ๐ ฟ๏ธ Park your Pathfinder on firm, level ground. Select Park and apply the parking brake.
- ๐งฑ Place wheel chocks securely behind both rear tires.
- ๐ก๏ธ Allow the engine to become completely cool.
- ๐ท Photograph the original belt routing and the underhood routing label before removing the belt.
- ๐ Compare the new and old belts before installation. Their length, width, and number of ribs must match.
๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Right-Front Wheel
- Use a 21mm deep socket and breaker bar to loosen each right-front wheel nut approximately one-half turn.
- Do not remove the wheel nuts while the tire is supporting the vehicle.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle
- Use the 2-ton floor jack at the reinforced right-front lifting point indicated by the notched pinch-weld area.
- Place the 2-ton jack stand beneath the adjacent reinforced pinch-weld support point.
- Lower the vehicle onto the stand and gently check that it is stable.
- Keep the floor jack nearby as backup support.
Step 3: Remove the Right-Front Wheel
- Use the 21mm deep socket to remove the loosened wheel nuts.
- Remove the wheel and place it flat away from your work area.
Step 4: Remove the Belt-Access Splash Shield
- Use the plastic trim-clip removal tool and flat-blade trim-clip screwdriver to release the right-front inner-fender clips.
- Use the 10mm socket, ratchet, and extension to remove any lower shield bolts securing the access panel.
- Move the splash shield aside to expose the crankshaft pulley, belt, and automatic tensioner.
- An automatic tensioner is the spring-loaded arm that maintains belt tension without manual adjustment.
Step 5: Record the Belt Routing
- Use the work light to compare the installed belt with the factory routing label in the engine compartment.
- Confirm which pulleys are grooved and which are smooth. The ribbed side of the belt runs on grooved pulleys; the flat side runs on smooth pulleys.
- If the routing label is missing, use your photograph as the installation reference.
Step 6: Release Belt Tension
- Fit the 14mm six-point socket and long-handle breaker bar onto the tensioner pulley bolt.
- Rotate the tensioner clockwise slowly to move it away from the belt and relieve tension.
- While holding the tensioner, slide the belt off an easy-to-reach smooth pulley with your free hand.
- Allow the tensioner to return slowly. Do not let it snap back.
- Never place fingers between belt and pulley.
Step 7: Remove and Inspect the Old Belt
- Remove the belt from each pulley by hand and guide it through the wheel-well opening.
- Use the work light to inspect the belt for cracks, missing ribs, glazing, or oil contamination.
- Spin each accessible idler pulley by hand. Replace any pulley that feels rough, loose, noisy, or binding before installing the belt.
- Move the tensioner through its travel using the 14mm socket and breaker bar. It should move smoothly and return firmly without sticking.
Step 8: Route the New Belt
- Route the new belt around the pulleys according to the factory diagram and your reference photograph.
- Leave one accessible smooth pulley until last.
- Use the work light to verify that every belt rib is seated inside a matching pulley groove.
- Make sure the belt is not twisted.
Step 9: Apply Tension to the New Belt
- Use the 14mm six-point socket and long-handle breaker bar to rotate the tensioner clockwise.
- Slip the belt over the final smooth pulley.
- Release the tensioner slowly until it rests against the belt.
- Inspect every pulley with the work light. A belt sitting one groove off-center can be damaged immediately after startup.
- The tensioner is automatic; no tension adjustment or tensioner-bolt tightening is required.
Step 10: Reinstall the Splash Shield
- Position the right-front splash shield without trapping or bending it against the belt.
- Install its bolts with the 10mm socket and tighten them snugly by hand. These small shield fasteners can break if overtightened.
- Install the original clips with the plastic trim-clip removal tool, replacing any damaged clips.
Step 11: Reinstall the Wheel
- Mount the wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 21mm deep socket to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
- Use the 2-ton floor jack to raise the vehicle slightly, remove the jack stand, and lower the tire to the ground.
- Use the torque wrench and 21mm deep socket to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern: Torque to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).
โ After Repair
- ๐ From a safe position, visually inspect the belt one final time before starting the engine.
- ๐ Start the engine and let it idle with the air conditioning switched off. Watch for smooth, centered belt operation.
- โ๏ธ Switch the air conditioning on and listen for squealing, slapping, chirping, or grinding.
- ๐ Shut the engine off immediately if the belt walks sideways or is not centered on every pulley.
- ๐ After the engine stops, recheck the belt seating and inspect the work area for forgotten tools.
- ๐ง Recheck the wheel-nut torque after approximately 80-160 km of driving.
