📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Escape on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool fully.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Take a clear photo of the old belt routing before removing it.
  • A serpentine belt tool is a long, thin handle used to move the spring-loaded belt tensioner in tight engine bays.
  • The belt tensioner is the spring-loaded pulley arm that keeps the belt tight while the engine runs.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood and Inspect the Belt

  • Use a flashlight to look at the belt from the top of the engine bay.
  • Check for cracks, missing ribs, shiny glazing, fraying, or oil contamination.
  • Use your phone to take a photo of the belt routing before removal.
  • Photos prevent routing mistakes.

Step 2: Loosen the Right Front Wheel

  • Use a 19mm socket and breaker bar or ratchet to slightly loosen the right front lug nuts while the tire is still on the ground.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.

Step 3: Raise and Support the Escape

  • Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the correct front jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the proper support points.
  • Lower the Escape gently onto the jack stands.
  • Give the vehicle a light shake to confirm it is stable before working near the wheel well.

Step 4: Remove the Right Front Wheel

  • Use a 19mm socket to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove the right front wheel and set it aside flat on the ground.
  • Keep the lug nuts together so none are lost.

Step 5: Remove the Right Inner Splash Shield

  • Use an 8mm socket to remove the small screws holding the inner fender splash shield.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool or flat-blade screwdriver to remove the plastic push clips.
  • Pull the splash shield back or remove it enough to access the crankshaft pulley and belt area.
  • A splash shield is the plastic liner inside the wheel well that blocks water and road debris.

Step 6: Locate the Belt Tensioner

  • Use a flashlight from the right wheel opening to find the belt tensioner pulley.
  • The tensioner sits against the smooth back side of the belt and has a spring-loaded arm.
  • Identify the square 3/8-inch drive opening or 15mm tensioner bolt head on the tensioner arm.

Step 7: Release Belt Tension

  • Use a 3/8-inch drive serpentine belt tool or 3/8-inch drive ratchet on the tensioner.
  • If your tensioner uses a bolt head, use a 15mm socket on the serpentine belt tool.
  • Rotate the tensioner slowly to unload the belt tension.
  • Hold the tensioner steady while sliding the belt off the easiest smooth pulley.
  • Slowly let the tensioner return to its resting position. Do not let it snap back.

Step 8: Remove the Old Belt

  • Use your hands to slip the belt off the remaining pulleys.
  • Pull the belt out through the right wheel opening.
  • Compare the old belt to the new serpentine belt. The new belt should match the old belt in width, rib count, and length.

Step 9: Inspect the Pulleys

  • Use your hand to spin the idler pulley and tensioner pulley.
  • They should spin smoothly without grinding, wobbling, or rough noise.
  • Use a flashlight to check each grooved pulley for dirt, rubber chunks, or damage.
  • If a pulley is seized, noisy, or loose, replace it before installing the new belt.

Step 10: Route the New Belt

  • Use your routing photo as your guide.
  • Route the new belt around the crankshaft pulley first, then around the remaining grooved pulleys.
  • Leave the easiest smooth pulley for last.
  • Make sure the ribbed side of the belt sits in grooved pulleys and the smooth side rides on smooth pulleys.
  • Every rib must sit in a groove.

Step 11: Reapply Tension

  • Use the 3/8-inch drive serpentine belt tool or 15mm socket to rotate the belt tensioner again.
  • Slip the belt over the final pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner until it tightens the belt.
  • Remove the tool carefully once the belt is seated.

Step 12: Verify Belt Alignment

  • Use a flashlight to inspect every pulley from the top and through the wheel opening.
  • Confirm the belt is centered and fully seated in all pulley grooves.
  • If the belt is one rib off, use the serpentine belt tool to relieve tension and reposition it before starting the engine.

Step 13: Reinstall the Splash Shield

  • Use the trim clip removal tool or your hands to reinstall the plastic push clips.
  • Use an 8mm socket to reinstall the splash shield screws.
  • Tighten the small fasteners snug only. Do not overtighten plastic fasteners.

Step 14: Reinstall the Right Front Wheel

  • Place the wheel back on the hub by hand.
  • Thread the lug nuts on by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 19mm socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 15: Lower the Escape and Torque the Wheel

  • Use the floor jack to raise the Escape slightly and remove the jack stands.
  • Lower the vehicle until the tire touches the ground.
  • Use a torque wrench and 19mm socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs)

Step 16: Start the Engine and Final Check

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Use a flashlight to watch the belt for smooth tracking.
  • Listen for squealing, chirping, slapping, or grinding.
  • Turn the engine off immediately if the belt walks off a pulley or makes loud noise.

  • ✅ Recheck belt alignment after the first start.
  • ✅ Turn on the A/C and headlights, then listen for belt squeal under accessory load.
  • ✅ After a short drive, inspect the belt again with the engine off.
  • ✅ Recheck right front lug nut torque after 25-50 miles.
  • ✅ If the new belt chirps or squeals, inspect the tensioner and pulley alignment.
