🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood and Inspect the Belt

- Use your phone to take a photo of the belt routing before removal.

- Pull the splash shield back or remove it enough to access the crankshaft pulley and belt area.
- A splash shield is the plastic liner inside the wheel well that blocks water and road debris.
Step 6: Locate the Belt Tensioner
- Use a flashlight from the right wheel opening to find the belt tensioner pulley.
- The tensioner sits against the smooth back side of the belt and has a spring-loaded arm.
- Identify the square 3/8-inch drive opening or 15mm tensioner bolt head on the tensioner arm.
Step 7: Release Belt Tension
- Use a 3/8-inch drive serpentine belt tool or 3/8-inch drive ratchet on the tensioner.
- If your tensioner uses a bolt head, use a 15mm socket on the serpentine belt tool.
- Rotate the tensioner slowly to unload the belt tension.
- Hold the tensioner steady while sliding the belt off the easiest smooth pulley.
- Slowly let the tensioner return to its resting position. Do not let it snap back.
Step 8: Remove the Old Belt
- Use your hands to slip the belt off the remaining pulleys.
- Pull the belt out through the right wheel opening.
- Compare the old belt to the new serpentine belt. The new belt should match the old belt in width, rib count, and length.
Step 9: Inspect the Pulleys
- Use your hand to spin the idler pulley and tensioner pulley.
- They should spin smoothly without grinding, wobbling, or rough noise.
- Use a flashlight to check each grooved pulley for dirt, rubber chunks, or damage.
- If a pulley is seized, noisy, or loose, replace it before installing the new belt.
Step 10: Route the New Belt
- Use your routing photo as your guide.
- Route the new belt around the crankshaft pulley first, then around the remaining grooved pulleys.
- Leave the easiest smooth pulley for last.
- Make sure the ribbed side of the belt sits in grooved pulleys and the smooth side rides on smooth pulleys.
- Every rib must sit in a groove.
Step 11: Reapply Tension
- Use the 3/8-inch drive serpentine belt tool or 15mm socket to rotate the belt tensioner again.
- Slip the belt over the final pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner until it tightens the belt.
- Remove the tool carefully once the belt is seated.
Step 12: Verify Belt Alignment
- Use a flashlight to inspect every pulley from the top and through the wheel opening.
- Confirm the belt is centered and fully seated in all pulley grooves.
- If the belt is one rib off, use the serpentine belt tool to relieve tension and reposition it before starting the engine.
Step 13: Reinstall the Splash Shield
- Use the trim clip removal tool or your hands to reinstall the plastic push clips.
- Use an 8mm socket to reinstall the splash shield screws.
- Tighten the small fasteners snug only. Do not overtighten plastic fasteners.
Step 14: Reinstall the Right Front Wheel
- Place the wheel back on the hub by hand.
- Thread the lug nuts on by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 19mm socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 15: Lower the Escape and Torque the Wheel
- Use the floor jack to raise the Escape slightly and remove the jack stands.
- Lower the vehicle until the tire touches the ground.
- Use a torque wrench and 19mm socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs)
