📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and locate the belt routing diagram if it is still present.
  • Let the engine cool before touching anything near the belt path.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the belt and tensioner

  • Open the hood and find the serpentine belt on the front of the engine.
  • Locate the automatic belt tensioner near the belt path.
  • The tensioner is the spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight.

Step 2: Note the belt routing

  • Use a flashlight to trace the belt around each pulley.
  • Check the under-hood routing diagram if it is available.
  • Take a quick phone photo first.

Step 3: Release belt tension

  • Use a 3/8-inch drive breaker bar or 3/8-inch drive ratchet in the tensioner square drive.
  • Rotate the tensioner in the direction that releases belt tension.
  • Keep firm control of the tool so the tensioner does not snap back.

Step 4: Remove the old belt

  • While holding the tensioner released, slip the belt off one easy-to-reach pulley.
  • Slowly let the tensioner return to its resting position.
  • Remove the belt from all pulleys and pull it out of the engine bay.

Step 5: Inspect the pulleys and tensioner

  • Spin each pulley by hand and listen for roughness or noise.
  • Check the tensioner arm for smooth movement and no wobble.
  • Replace any noisy pulley or weak tensioner before installing the new belt.

Step 6: Install the new belt

  • Route the new belt around all pulleys except one easy-access pulley.
  • Use the routing diagram to make sure the ribs sit in the grooves.
  • Hold the tensioner released again with the 3/8-inch drive breaker bar or 3/8-inch drive ratchet.
  • Slip the belt onto the last pulley and then slowly release the tensioner.

Step 7: Verify belt seating

  • Check every pulley to make sure the belt is fully seated and centered.
  • Make sure the ribbed side of the belt is on ribbed pulleys.
  • Confirm the belt is not twisted anywhere.

  • Start the engine and watch the belt for a few seconds.
  • Listen for squealing, chirping, or pulley noise.
  • Check that the belt tracks smoothly across all pulleys.
  • Shut the engine off and recheck belt alignment if needed.
