📋 Before You Begin

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Find the Belt Routing Diagram

  • Use a work light to locate the belt routing diagram under the hood.
  • Compare the diagram to the actual belt path on the front of the engine.
  • If the sticker is missing, use the photo you took before starting.
  • The ribbed side of the belt rides on ribbed pulleys, and the smooth side rides on smooth pulleys.
  • Photo first, tools second.

Step 2: Locate the Belt Tensioner

  • Use a work light and look at the front of the engine for the spring-loaded tensioner arm.
  • The tensioner has a pulley on it and keeps the belt tight automatically.
  • Look for the square 1/2-inch drive opening on the tensioner arm.

Step 3: Release Belt Tension

  • Insert the 1/2-inch drive breaker bar or serpentine belt tool into the tensioner’s square drive opening.
  • Slowly rotate the tensioner to remove tension from the belt.
  • While holding the tensioner, slide the belt off one smooth upper pulley by hand.
  • Slowly let the tensioner return to its resting position.
  • Do not let the tool snap back.

Step 4: Remove the Old Belt

  • Use your hands to pull the old belt off the remaining pulleys.
  • If the belt hangs up, use a flat-blade screwdriver gently to guide it around the pulley edge.
  • Do not pry hard against plastic covers or pulley grooves.
  • Lift the old belt out of the engine bay.

Step 5: Compare the Old Belt to the New Belt

  • Lay the old belt and new serpentine belt next to each other.
  • Check that the new belt has the same width and same number of ribs.
  • The old belt may be slightly longer from normal stretching.
  • If the new belt has a different rib count, do not install it.

Step 6: Inspect the Pulleys

  • Use mechanic gloves and spin each accessible pulley by hand.
  • Feel for grinding, wobbling, roughness, or looseness.
  • Use a work light to check for oil or coolant on the pulleys.
  • If a pulley is noisy or loose, replace that pulley before installing the new belt.

Step 7: Route the New Belt

  • Use the belt routing diagram and begin routing the new belt around the lower pulleys first.
  • Use your hands to place the ribbed side of the belt into the ribbed pulleys.
  • Route the smooth side of the belt over smooth pulleys.
  • Leave the easiest smooth upper pulley for last.
  • Keep every rib seated.

Step 8: Move the Tensioner Again

  • Insert the 1/2-inch drive breaker bar or serpentine belt tool into the tensioner.
  • Slowly rotate the tensioner to create slack in the belt.
  • Slide the belt over the last pulley by hand.
  • Slowly release the tensioner until it tightens the belt.

Step 9: Check Belt Alignment

  • Use a work light to inspect every pulley.
  • Make sure the belt is centered and fully seated in all pulley grooves.
  • If the belt is one rib off, use the 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to release tension and reposition it.
  • No mounting bolts are removed for normal belt replacement, so no torque spec is required.

Step 10: Reconnect the Battery if Disconnected

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the terminal clamp.
  • Do not overtighten the battery terminal.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and watch the belt from a safe distance for 20-30 seconds.
  • ✅ The belt should run smoothly with no squeal, wobble, or jumping.
  • ✅ Turn the A/C on and make sure the belt still tracks correctly.
  • ✅ Shut the engine off and recheck that the belt is fully seated.
  • ✅ If you hear squealing, stop the engine and recheck routing and pulley alignment.
