🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Inspect and Record the Belt Routing
- Use the LED work light to follow the old belt around every pulley.
- Confirm that the ribbed side of the belt contacts grooved pulleys and the smooth back contacts smooth pulleys.
- Photograph or sketch the routing before releasing the tensioner. The replacement belt must follow exactly the same path.
- Take pictures before touching the tensioner.
Step 2: Position the Tensioner Tool
- Put on the safety glasses and mechanic's gloves.
- Fit the 14mm six-point socket and 3/8-inch-drive long-handle ratchet onto the tensioner pulley bolt. Use the 3-inch extension only if additional clearance is needed.
- If the ratchet does not provide sufficient leverage, use the 3/8-inch-drive breaker bar or serpentine belt installation tool with the 14mm socket.
- Do not loosen or remove the pulley bolt. It is being used only as a leverage point to rotate the tensioner.
Step 3: Release Belt Tension
- Use the 14mm socket and long handle to rotate the automatic tensioner smoothly toward the passenger side of the engine compartment.
- Stop if the pulley bolt begins turning independently instead of moving the entire tensioner arm.
- While holding the tensioner against spring pressure, slide the belt off the easiest smooth pulley.
- Slowly return the tensioner to its resting position. Do not let it snap back.
Step 4: Remove the Old Belt
- Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys by hand, working it through the available clearance.
- Use the LED work light to check whether the old belt shows cracks, missing ribs, polished surfaces, frayed edges, or fluid contamination.
- Compare the old and new belts side by side. Their overall length, width, and number of ribs must match.
Step 5: Inspect the Pulleys and Tensioner
- Turn each accessible idler and tensioner pulley by hand. An idler is a free-spinning guide pulley.
- Each pulley should rotate smoothly without grinding, looseness, or side-to-side wobble.
- Inspect the pulley grooves with the LED work light. Remove loose rubber debris by hand with the engine off.
- Stop the repair if the tensioner is seized, weak, crooked, leaking damping fluid, or visibly damaged.
Step 6: Route the New Belt
- Route the new belt by hand according to your photographs and the underhood routing label.
- Keep the belt fully seated in every grooved pulley. One misplaced rib can quickly destroy the new belt.
- Leave the belt off one easily reached smooth pulley until the final installation step.
- Verify that the belt is not twisted and does not cross over itself.
- Leave the easiest smooth pulley until last.
Step 7: Install the Belt Over the Final Pulley
- Use the 14mm socket with the long-handle ratchet, breaker bar, or serpentine belt installation tool to rotate the tensioner again.
- Slide the belt completely over the final smooth pulley by hand.
- Keep fingers away from the gap between the belt and pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner until it applies tension to the belt.
- No fasteners are removed during normal belt replacement, so there is no installation torque specification for this procedure.
Step 8: Verify Belt Alignment
- Use the LED work light to inspect every pulley from above and from both sides.
- Confirm that every belt rib sits inside a matching pulley groove and that no edge hangs over a pulley.
- Use the 14mm socket to release tension and reposition the belt if it is misaligned. Never pry the belt sideways with a screwdriver.
- Remove every tool from the engine compartment before starting the engine.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start the engine and watch the belt from a safe distance for approximately 30 seconds.
- ✅ Switch the air conditioning on and turn the steering wheel slightly in each direction while stationary. Listen for squealing, slapping, or grinding.
- ✅ Switch off the engine immediately if the belt walks sideways, jumps, or fails to run centrally on the pulleys.
- ✅ Recheck belt seating with the engine off after a short drive.
- ✅ No belt-tension adjustment, scan-tool reset, or break-in procedure is required because the tensioner is automatic.
