🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

• Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
• Lift the negative cable off the battery post and position it where it cannot spring back.
• Black cable comes off first.

Step 2: Locate the Belt Tensioner

• Use a flashlight to look at the passenger side of the engine where the serpentine belt runs around the pulleys.
• Find the automatic belt tensioner pulley. It is the smooth pulley mounted to a spring-loaded arm.
• Use a mirror inspection tool if visibility is limited.

Step 3: Check the Belt Routing

• Use a flashlight to compare the existing belt path to the belt routing decal.
• If the decal is missing, use your phone to take a photo before removing the belt.
• Make sure you can see how the belt wraps around each pulley before moving forward.
• Photos prevent routing mistakes.

Step 4: Release Belt Tension

• Place a 14mm socket on the tensioner bolt head.
• Attach the 3/8-inch drive long-handle breaker bar or serpentine belt tool to the socket.

Step 5: Remove the Old Belt

• Use the flashlight to check that no pieces of the old belt remain in the pulley grooves.

Step 7: Route the New Belt

• Use the belt routing decal or your photo to guide the new serpentine drive belt around the pulleys.
• Leave the easiest upper smooth pulley for last.
• Make sure the ribbed side of the belt sits in grooved pulleys.
• Make sure the smooth back side of the belt contacts smooth pulleys.
• Use the flashlight to confirm the belt is centered on every pulley before applying tension.

Step 8: Reapply Tension

• Place the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive long-handle breaker bar or serpentine belt tool back on the tensioner.
• Rotate the tensioner clockwise again.
• Slip the belt over the final pulley by hand.
• Slowly release the tensioner until it tightens the belt.
• There are no mounting bolts removed for this repair, so no torque specification is required.

Step 9: Verify Belt Alignment

• Use the flashlight to inspect every pulley.
• Confirm the belt ribs are fully seated in the pulley grooves.
• Confirm the belt is not hanging off the edge of any pulley.
• If the belt is misaligned, use the 14mm socket and breaker bar to release tension and reseat it.

Step 10: Reconnect the Battery

• Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
• Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the clamp until snug.
• Do not overtighten the battery terminal.
