- Park your Tundra on level ground, select Park, engage the parking brake, and remove the key.
- Open the hood and allow the engine to become completely cold.
- Locate the factory belt-routing label near the radiator support or underside of the hood.
- Use a phone to photograph the original belt routing before removing it.
- Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable. Position the cable where it cannot touch the terminal.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Inspect the Existing Belt Routing
- Use an LED work light to identify every pulley and compare the belt with the factory routing label.
- Notice that the belt’s ribbed side contacts grooved pulleys. Its smooth back contacts smooth pulleys.
- Identify the automatic tensioner near the front of the engine. The tensioner is a spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight.
- Keep your routing photo nearby.
Step 2: Release Belt Tension
- Fit a 14mm six-point socket and long-handle 3/8-inch-drive ratchet onto the tensioner pulley’s center bolt.
- Rotate the tensioner clockwise, toward the passenger side, to take tension off the belt.
- Hold the ratchet securely. The tensioner has strong spring pressure and will return when released.
- With your free hand, slide the belt off an easy-to-reach smooth pulley.
- Slowly return the tensioner to its resting position. Do not let the ratchet snap back.
Step 3: Remove the Old Belt
- Remove the 14mm socket and ratchet from the tensioner.
- Pull the loose belt away from each accessory pulley while checking how it passes around the fan.
- Work the belt over the mechanical cooling fan one blade at a time. Turn the fan gently by hand as needed; do not force or bend the blades.
- Lift the belt out of the engine compartment.
Step 4: Inspect the Pulleys and Tensioner
- Use mechanic’s gloves to rotate each accessible idler pulley by hand.
- Replace a pulley or tensioner before installing the belt if it feels rough, binds, wobbles, or makes a grinding sound.
- Check the automatic tensioner for leakage, a crooked pulley, weak spring pressure, or excessive movement.
- Use an LED work light to check the pulley grooves for stones, rubber, or other debris.
Step 5: Position the New Belt
- Compare the new belt with the old belt. The new belt should have the same width and number of ribs.
- Feed the new belt around the cooling fan one blade at a time, using mechanic’s gloves to protect your hands.
- Route the belt according to the factory underhood diagram and your reference photograph.
- Leave one easy-to-reach smooth pulley until last.
- Verify that the ribbed side is against every grooved pulley and the smooth side is against every smooth pulley.
Step 6: Install the Belt Over the Final Pulley
- Place the 14mm six-point socket and long-handle 3/8-inch-drive ratchet on the tensioner pulley’s center bolt.
- Rotate the tensioner clockwise to create enough slack for installation.
- Slide the belt over the final smooth pulley without placing your fingers between the belt and pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner until it applies full pressure to the belt.
- No fastener is removed during this procedure, so there is no tensioner-bolt torque step.
Step 7: Verify Belt Alignment
- Use an LED work light to inspect every pulley from above and from both sides of the fan shroud.
- Confirm that every belt rib sits fully inside a matching pulley groove.
- Check that the belt is centered on all smooth pulleys and is not riding over a pulley edge.
- If alignment is incorrect, use the 14mm socket and long-handle ratchet to release the tensioner again and reposition the belt.
Step 8: Reconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket to reconnect and secure the negative battery cable.
- Tighten the terminal only until it cannot rotate by hand. Do not overtighten the soft battery-terminal clamp.
- Remove the 10mm socket, ratchet, extension, work light, and all loose items from the engine compartment.
✅ After Repair
- Stand clear of the fan and start the engine.
- Watch the belt from a safe distance for approximately 30 seconds. It should run centrally without wandering, fluttering, or squealing.
- Switch on the air conditioning and verify that the belt remains stable when the compressor engages.
- Shut off the engine immediately if the belt walks toward a pulley edge or produces persistent noise.
- After the engine stops, use an LED work light to perform one final alignment inspection.
- No belt adjustment, scan-tool reset, coding, or break-in procedure is required.
