Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the Belt Routing

• Use a work light to find the serpentine belt routing sticker under the hood or near the radiator support.
• Compare the sticker to the current belt path around the pulleys.
• If the sticker is missing, use your phone photo from the preparation step as your guide.
• Take photos from two angles.

Step 2: Find the Belt Tensioner

• Use the work light to locate the automatic belt tensioner on the front of the engine.
• The tensioner has a pulley and a hex-shaped boss for a socket or belt tool.
• Use a 14mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet, 3/8-inch drive breaker bar, or serpentine belt tool.
• A breaker bar is a longer handle that gives extra leverage without forcing the tool.

Step 3: Release Belt Tension

• Put on safety glasses and mechanic gloves.
• Place the 14mm socket on the tensioner hex.
• Use the 3/8-inch drive breaker bar or serpentine belt tool to slowly rotate the tensioner clockwise to relieve belt tension.
• Hold the tensioner steady. Do not let it snap back.

Step 4: Remove the Old Belt

Step 6: Route the New Belt

• Route the new serpentine belt around the pulleys using the routing diagram or your photo.
• Make sure the ribbed side of the belt sits in grooved pulleys.
• Make sure the smooth side of the belt rides on smooth pulleys.
• Leave the easiest upper smooth pulley for last.
• Every rib must sit in a groove.

Step 7: Slip the Belt Onto the Last Pulley

• Place the 14mm socket on the tensioner again.
• Use the 3/8-inch drive breaker bar or serpentine belt tool to rotate the tensioner clockwise.
• Slide the belt over the last pulley by hand.
• Slowly release the tensioner until it applies tension to the belt.
• Do not pry the belt on with a screwdriver. That can damage the new belt.

Step 8: Check Belt Alignment

• Use the work light to inspect the belt on every pulley.
• Confirm the belt is centered on smooth pulleys.
• Confirm all belt ribs are fully seated in grooved pulleys.
• If the belt is one groove off, use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive breaker bar to release tension again and reposition it.

Step 9: Start and Recheck

• Remove all tools from the engine bay.
• Start the engine and let it idle for 20-30 seconds.
• Turn the engine off.
• Use the work light to recheck that the belt is still centered and tracking straight.
• If you hear squealing or see wobble, shut the engine off immediately and recheck the belt routing.
