Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the Belt
- Use the hood release handle inside the cabin, then open the hood and support it securely.
- Use a flashlight to locate the serpentine belt at the front of the engine.
- The serpentine belt is the long ribbed rubber belt that wraps around several pulleys.
- Find the belt tensioner. The tensioner is a spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight.
Step 2: Record the Belt Routing
- Use your phone or camera to take a photo of the belt path before removal.
- Use the flashlight to make sure the photo clearly shows each pulley.
- If there is a belt routing decal under the hood, compare it to the belt on the engine.
- Take two photos from different angles.
Step 3: Release Belt Tension
- Put the 14mm socket on the center bolt of the belt tensioner pulley.
- Attach the 3/8-inch drive breaker bar or 3/8-inch drive ratchet to the socket.
- Slowly rotate the tensioner to release belt tension.
- Hold the tensioner in the released position with one hand on the tool.
- With your other hand, slide the belt off the easiest smooth pulley.
- Do not remove the tensioner bolt. You are only using it to rotate the tensioner arm.
Step 4: Remove the Old Belt
- Slowly let the tensioner return to its resting position using the 3/8-inch drive breaker bar or 3/8-inch drive ratchet.
- Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys by hand.
- If the belt is stuck near a pulley lip, use a flathead screwdriver gently to guide it free.
- Do not force the screwdriver against plastic parts or the radiator fan shroud.
Step 5: Compare the Old and New Belts
- Lay the old belt and new belt side by side on the ground.
- Check that the new serpentine belt has the same width and nearly the same length as the old belt.
- A small length difference is normal because the old belt may be stretched.
- Do not install the belt if it is much longer, much shorter, or has the wrong number of ribs.
Step 6: Inspect the Pulleys
- Use the flashlight to inspect each pulley before installing the new belt.

- Leave the easiest smooth pulley for last so the belt is easier to slip on.
Step 8: Release the Tensioner Again
- Place the 14mm socket back on the belt tensioner pulley bolt.
- Use the 3/8-inch drive breaker bar or 3/8-inch drive ratchet to rotate the tensioner slowly.
- Slide the new belt over the final pulley by hand.
- Keep fingers away from the gap between the belt and pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner until it tightens the belt.
Step 9: Check Belt Alignment
- Use the flashlight to inspect every pulley.
- Make sure the belt ribs are fully seated in each grooved pulley.
- Make sure the belt is centered on each smooth pulley.
- If the belt is one rib off, use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive breaker bar to release tension and reposition it.
- No belt bolts are removed or tightened during this job, so there is no torque spec for the belt itself.
Step 10: Start and Verify Operation
- Remove all tools from the engine bay.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
- Watch the belt from a safe distance. It should run smoothly with no jumping, squealing, or wobbling.
- Turn the engine off and recheck belt alignment with the flashlight.
