🔧 Rear Turn Signal Bulb - Replacement

On your Accord coupe, the rear turn signal bulb is serviced from inside the trunk by removing the rear lamp access trim. This is a simple bulb swap, but the trim panels are easy to scratch, so work slowly and use the right trim tool.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off and let the bulb cool before touching it.
  • Use a glove or clean cloth when handling the new bulb. Skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • Do not force the taillight assembly or trim panels. The tabs can break easily.
  • If you remove the battery negative cable, it is not strictly required for this job, but it can prevent accidental shorting while you work near the lamp connectors.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Trim panel tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb, amber - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and clear out the cargo area so the side trim can move freely.
  • If you want extra working room, disconnect the negative battery cable with an 8mm socket.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the trunk and access the rear lamp area

  • Open the trunk lid fully.
  • Pull back the trunk side carpet on the side of the burned-out turn signal bulb.
  • Use a trim panel tool to gently release any push clips or retainers holding the side liner in place.
  • Work slowly to avoid cracking the trim.

Step 2: Remove the rear lamp access fasteners

  • Use an 8mm socket and ratchet to remove the taillight mounting nuts from inside the trunk.
  • If your trim panel has a small screw, remove it with a Phillips screwdriver.
  • Set the fasteners aside in order so they go back in the same place.
  • Torque on reassembly: 7 Nm (5 ft-lbs)

Step 3: Pull the taillight assembly straight back

  • Hold the lamp assembly with both hands and pull it straight rearward to release the locating pins.
  • Do not twist the housing. That can break the guide tabs.
  • If it sticks, wiggle it gently while pulling back.

Step 4: Remove the bulb socket

  • Find the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the lamp assembly.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new amber bulb into the socket until it seats fully.
  • Match the bulb base exactly before pushing it in.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp housing.
  • Twist it clockwise until it locks.
  • Line up the lamp assembly with the body openings and press it straight in.
  • Reinstall the nuts with the 8mm socket and tighten to 7 Nm (5 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reassemble the trunk trim

  • Reinstall any screws with the Phillips screwdriver.
  • Push the trunk liner and clips back into place by hand.
  • Make sure the carpet sits flat and nothing is pinched.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn on the ignition and activate the left and right turn signals.
  • Check that the repaired side flashes normally and at the correct speed.
  • Check the brake light and tail light on that side to make sure the lamp assembly is seated correctly.
  • If the bulb does not light, remove it and check that it is fully seated in the socket.
