🔧 1500 - Rear Door Lock Actuator Replacement

This repair replaces the rear door lock actuator inside the rear door. The actuator is the small electric motor/gear unit that locks and unlocks the latch when you press the key fob, door switch, or Uconnect lock command.

On your 1500, the rear door trim panel must be removed, then the latch/actuator assembly is accessed from inside the door shell.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging door electrical connectors to reduce the chance of shorting a circuit.
  • ⚠️ Work with the window fully raised so the glass is out of the way inside the door.
  • ⚠️ The inside of the door has sharp metal edges. Wear gloves.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull hard on the vapor barrier. It keeps water out of the cab and must reseal fully.
  • ⚠️ Support the door trim panel as you unplug wiring so you do not stretch or break connectors.

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear door lock actuator/latch assembly - Qty: 1
  • Door trim panel retaining clips - Qty: As needed
  • Butyl tape sealant - Qty: 1 roll

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your 1500 on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Raise the rear window fully before starting.
  • Unlock the door manually before disconnecting the battery.
  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to disconnect the negative battery cable. Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery post.
  • A trim panel removal tool is a flat plastic pry tool that helps pop door clips loose without scratching the panel.
  • Butyl tape is a sticky black sealant used to reseal the plastic water shield behind the door panel.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Rear Door Switch Trim

  • Use a trim panel removal tool to gently pry up the rear door window switch trim from the armrest.
  • Lift the trim only a few inches at first.
  • Use your fingers or a pick tool to release the electrical connector lock tab, then unplug the switch.
  • Go slowly to avoid broken tabs.

Step 2: Remove Hidden Door Panel Fasteners

  • Use a Phillips screwdriver #2 or Torx T20 screwdriver, depending on the installed fastener style, to remove the screw inside the switch opening.
  • Look behind the interior door handle trim cover.
  • Use a pick tool to carefully open the small cover, then remove the hidden screw with the correct Phillips screwdriver #2 or Torx T20 screwdriver.
  • Check the lower edge of the door panel for additional screws and remove them with the same driver if equipped.

Step 3: Release the Door Trim Panel

  • Use a trim panel removal tool at the lower rear corner of the panel.
  • Pry outward to release the first plastic retaining clip.
  • Continue around the lower and side edges until all clips are loose.
  • Lift the panel straight upward to unhook it from the top window ledge.
  • Do not yank the panel away. Wiring and handle cables may still be attached.

Step 4: Disconnect Door Panel Cables and Wiring

  • Support the panel with one hand.
  • Use a pick tool to release any electrical connector locks, then unplug the connectors.
  • If the inner handle uses a cable, rotate the cable end out of its bracket by hand or with needle-nose pliers.
  • Set the door panel on a clean surface.

Step 5: Peel Back the Vapor Barrier

  • Use a plastic scraper to gently separate the black butyl sealant from the door shell.
  • Peel the vapor barrier back only far enough to reach the rear latch area.
  • Use masking tape to hold the vapor barrier out of the way.
  • Do not tear it. Water leaks and wind noise can happen if it is damaged.

Step 6: Disconnect the Lock Rods and Cables

  • Use a work light to see the latch at the rear edge of the door.
  • Take a quick photo of the rod and cable positions before removal.
  • Use a pick tool or needle-nose pliers to rotate the plastic rod retainer clips open.
  • Lift the lock rods out of their retainers.
  • If equipped with a cable, unclip the cable housing from the latch bracket, then rotate the cable end out by hand.
  • A photo saves reassembly mistakes.

Step 7: Unplug the Actuator Connector

  • Use a pick tool to release the lock tab on the actuator/latch electrical connector.
  • Pull the connector straight out by the connector body, not the wires.

Step 8: Remove the Rear Door Latch/Actuator Assembly

  • Open the rear door fully.
  • At the rear edge of the door, locate the three latch mounting screws.
  • Use a Torx T30 socket, extension 6-inch, and ratchet to remove the three latch screws.
  • Hold the latch with your other hand inside the door so it does not drop.
  • Slide the latch/actuator assembly out through the access opening inside the door.

Step 9: Compare the New and Old Parts

  • Place the old and new rear door lock actuator/latch assembly side by side.
  • Confirm the connector shape, latch shape, cable attachment points, and rod lever positions match.
  • If any foam seals or rubber bumpers transfer from the old latch, move them by hand to the new latch.

Step 10: Install the New Actuator/Latch Assembly

  • Guide the new latch/actuator assembly into the door through the access opening.
  • Line it up with the three screw holes at the rear edge of the door.
  • Start all three screws by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use a Torx T30 socket and torque wrench inch-pound to tighten the latch screws to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 11: Reconnect Rods, Cables, and Wiring

  • Use your reference photo to reinstall each lock rod into the correct lever.
  • Use needle-nose pliers if needed to seat the rods fully.
  • Snap each plastic rod retainer closed by hand.
  • Reconnect any handle cable by rotating the cable end into the latch lever, then clipping the cable housing into its bracket.
  • Plug in the actuator electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 12: Test Before Reinstalling the Door Panel

  • Keep hands clear of the latch opening.
  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to temporarily reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Use the key fob or door lock switch to lock and unlock the rear door.
  • Use a screwdriver handle to simulate the striker by carefully closing the latch jaws, then pull the interior and exterior handles to confirm release.
  • If the lock does not move, unplug and reseat the actuator connector.
  • After testing, use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable again before final panel installation.

Step 13: Reseal the Vapor Barrier

  • Remove the masking tape holding the vapor barrier.
  • Press the vapor barrier back onto the original butyl sealant by hand.
  • If the sealant is missing, dirty, or no longer sticky, apply butyl tape sealant around the opening.
  • Use a plastic scraper to press the edges flat without tearing the barrier.

Step 14: Reinstall the Door Trim Panel

  • Reconnect the interior handle cable and all electrical connectors by hand.
  • Hang the top of the door panel over the window ledge.
  • Line up the plastic clips with the holes in the door.
  • Press around the panel edges by hand until each clip snaps in.
  • Replace any broken door trim panel retaining clips before final installation.

Step 15: Reinstall Door Panel Screws and Switch Trim

  • Use the correct Phillips screwdriver #2 or Torx T20 screwdriver to reinstall the hidden screws.
  • Tighten small interior trim screws snug only. Do not overtighten into plastic.
  • Plug in the window switch connector by hand.
  • Snap the switch trim back into the armrest by pressing evenly around the edges.

Step 16: Reconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Tighten the terminal clamp snugly so it does not rotate by hand.
  • Do not overtighten the battery terminal.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Lock and unlock the rear door at least five times using the key fob.
  • ✅ Lock and unlock the rear door using the driver door switch.
  • ✅ Test the inside and outside rear door handles.
  • ✅ Confirm the child safety lock still works correctly if equipped.
  • ✅ Check that the rear window switch works after reconnecting the trim.
  • ✅ Drive slowly over a rough road and listen for rattles from loose clips.
  • ✅ If the express window feature acts oddly after battery disconnect, fully lower the window, then fully raise it and hold the switch up for 2 seconds.
